I think this may be due to the way some programs work when saving files, in
that they don't modify the original directly, instead they save a copy then
delete the original.
In other cases, some programs create a temporary file alongside the
original. Word does this. If the temporary file cannot be deleted, then at
the very least your disk will start to fill with these things, at worst it
may malfunction.
