I have access to the following speeds at home:
- 256/256 DSL (down/up)
- 1024/256 Cable Modem (down/up)
At home I get the maximum speed up and down consistently from certain
sites/places bot on my Mac OS X OS machines and Windows XP machines on
either connection type.
At work, I have access to Dual OC-3 lines to the Internet and cannot say i
have ever achieved what would be maximum there - but who cares? heh
Essentially, what I am saying is that I cannot fathom it being the patches
you have installed that is slowing down your connection. While some patches
have been known to do that before being revised and "fixed", none should
have that lasting affect. Now firewalls and antivirus software and the
likes can make the connection slow down because of their nature of checking
data as it is tranferred, so if you are seeing slower speeds, these could,
in fact, be somewhat the culprit - but that the decreases you claim, that
would mean something is badly configured.
