I know of nothing that is "quick" and "cheap".
The best thing I ever did was take the 4 semester series of Cisco CCNA
classes. Many local Colleges have them and the classes are "overseen" by
Cisco. You don't have to take the CCNA exam afterwards if you don't want
to, but the classes have were invaluable to me.
The classes focus on the technology and functionality of networks "on their
own",...that is without regaurd to the "computers" that run on the network.
That is a key element to consider,...computers only "use" the network they
are not "the" network and the network exists via the network components
consisting of cables, hubs, switches, routers (not refering to NAT
devices),...even if no computers are even attached to it. If you can't
think of it that way in those terms you will always have a hard time with
it.
