Is there a free or open source software package that will send the
location or other info of a laptop if it's stolen? Any recommendations
would be appreciated.

You have hardware tracing (ie a GPS system built into the laptop).

How is software to know where it is; it is unable to just look out the
window. The best you could do with software is have it ping some website
that tracks it, so you could lookup that ping to its ISP and then ask them.

But its not that good an idea, go for hardware trackers.

Was thinking about this last place I worked, where quite a few laptops got
stolen.

Since most home computers are connected to the Internet, it shouldn't be too
difficult to write something that would report the computer's IP address to a
website each time it connects. Then it's mainly a question of asking the ISP
if they can put a finger on which customer was using that IP at that time,
which most will do if there's a criminal investigation involved.

Only works if the HD isn't wiped, of course. But then, my guess is that most
thieves wouldn't know how anyway.
