HI,

I have a strange problem. My XP Pro system is connected to DSL all the time
and I have Sygate firewall installed. When I am working on the system,
occasionally I get alerts that somebody is scanning my ports giving a list
of port numbers. Roughtly 2-3 alerts in an hour. The strange part is that
these alerts never come when the system is idle even though the Net
connection is always on.

The source ip address always has the same Net id as mine.

Any ideas what could be happening? I doubt if somebody is actually scanning
my computer.

Thanks for any tips.

Ramesh

i wouldn't doubt it. there are lots of viruses, worms, and other nasties
out there that regularly scan for new machines to infect. if you put a
machine on the internet without a firewall it can be infected within
minutes.

p.s. now that you have used your real address in this news group you can
expect a lot of virus laden mail to be heading your way. make sure your
virus scanner is up to date.

A number of ISPs port scan for open relays or proxies,
you'll find the info in their terms and conditions if they
do.

It depends on your DSL ISP. Some never check out your system, others (Like
Verizon that I use) scan often, not to try to steal info, but just checking
the network and the response times and if they see a problem in overloaded
area's, will then do some resource changing to keep the network running
smoothly and traffic is spread out as it should and not be overloading a
remote server. So..in other words, its usually just a check from your ISP
asking "Hi are you there and working OK"
