I am hoping that one of you gurus can help with this. It
seems like my e-mail address is getting plucked off of my
computer as I surf the web and then being given to
spammers. I am inferring this from the type of e-mails I
am receiving right after I visit sites (music spam after
hitting music sites, diet spam after wieght-loss sights,
etc.). I there a way to shield my personal information
from these web sites? Thanks in advance

hi
u probably have spyware in your computer after visiting
one of the sites, it also could be the internet cookies
that u have in ur computer, they download information on
all the websites u've visted, u could get spynuker to get
rid of all or some of the cookies or u could get a
firewall or spam blocker(this might cost u but u can get
some for free). u should also scan ur computer regularly
coz some of these programs download themselves onto ur
computer. lastly dont open ur junk mail, this only
confirms that ur address exists n they will flood ur inbox
with junk.

A few months ago someone posted a message dealing with
your e-mail being embedded in the registry and web sites
being able to request and receive that info, by your
visiting a site, and they also suggested a method to stop
this, I don't remember which site it was, I think this
newsgroup, the problem is that most of those messages are
no longer kept on microsofts server as the archive date is
now 30 days, maybe you can do a search in google's archives
for this message. or the person who posted it can read
your message and respond back, good luck..

You're in luck, I found the posting , I had saved it to my
personal files. here it is...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
\Internet
Settings

and change the value called EmailName: to another EMAIL
address like:

EmailName: foobar@foobar.com

I also have "IEuser@"=20
Now what would it use for my assigned e-mail address and who assigns and =
converts it?
Does not make any sense to me-I have several accounts.

Gotcha--wonder where that value lives, especially if I am a Netscape or
Eudora user?

At any rate, I think I might change to my munged address, just to see what
happens.

Stop worrying about it...

It will not be converted to your real email address. (Windows doesn't even
know your real email address* - many people have several.)

As far as I am aware, this is the email address used by IE for anonymous
authentication. In other words, it is -designed- not to reveal your real
address. For example, if you require authentication at somedomain.com, IE
will provide a username of IEUser@somedomain.com (unless you supply a real
username, of course). Regrettably, I can't actually find a reference that
spells all this out anywhere.

Thanks. I used to know the number of the KB article that specifies how the
unread mail count is defined, but have mercifully forgotten it!

Thanks for the details, I took it for granted when I read
the post, didn't really understand it, and passed it on.
if it's in error, I'll stop passing it on.
