Address books & viruses
Hi- Just what kind of emails do we have to worry about
when it comes to the ones that spread to your address
book (thus infecting contacts in that address book-or
spreading via those contacts)-
If an email was opened in OExpress that contained this
type of virus/worm/trojen, does it affect the address
book in OE??? What if an email was opened in Yahoo that
contained this type of virus/worm/trojen, would it affect
the address book in Yahoo?? Or is yahoo's address book
excempt from these types of viruses simply because the
address books are on their site and controlled by them.

MS04-028
I'm just starting to find my way around both public
discussions (not sure if I'll know how to see the reply
for this) and security updates, and I've come across my
first glitch with the latter, specifically in the MS04-028
security bulletin.
I'm running WIN98SE, and have just downloaded and
installed the security update for IE6SecurityPack 1,
KB833989, based on the info I found here...
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
FamilyID=b0095851-674d-4357-868c-
dd75d88405ec&displaylang=en
which indicated that WIN98 was software affected by this
issue. However, the MS04-028 bulletin, which I didn't
see 'till later, listed WIN98 in the unaffected group.
Did I goof? Will this cause slowdowns or hangs on my
machine? Tag: Security password Tag: 62884

File sharing and wireless roaming
I tried this question on the wireless group and got no response, so here
goes...
Windows XP SP2 home laptop, connected at home with a wired/wireless router,
I have a couple of folders shared over the network that I use to transfer
misc. files and photos (MSHome is not the workgroup name I use). The
sharing is set to full, with no password currently, as there is no need for
the PW on the home network; the wireless is WEP protected.
So, when I go to a coffee place that has free wireless and I connect for
internet purposes, will those shared folders be visible to others using that
same wireless connection? They won't be in the same workgroup, but I'm not
so sure that means they can't see the files or shared folders.
I'm guessing that the Windows firewall would block them from writing files,
even without a password set, since they're not in my workgroup. But I don't
see what would stop them from viewing or copying.
There is nothing especially private in either of them at any time, but I'd
prefer that someone sitting in the coffee shop can't just click on "network
places" and see my workgroup and folders there, or worse, access them. I
can set a password for the full sharing of the folders; but regardless of
that would like to know if they would be able to see my shared resources,
and if so what can be done short of turning sharing off when I travel.
Thanks.

strange space limitation on boot drive c:
hello dear administrators,
i am having a very strange problem. i, usually, clean boot drive c:, by
removing old files using option disk cleanup and cleaning old system files.
for example , i have space on boot drive = 4 Gb
used = 3.45 gb
free= 565 Mb
....
now, the problem is strange, when i cleaned disk(drive c:)
the free space becomes =700 MB as it should be.
but last time i used ICQ chat messenger and after it almost every day i saw
that my drive space is getting in use more and more
now free space on disk is almost 322 MB
i cleaned up drive c: , using disk clean up option, but it become
325 Mb instead of 565 as it should be, because i didn't install any program
for a long time , all old internet files are removed from the disk
i think there is any spyware or adware installed on my PC,
please guide me what to do with it and how to remove it ?
is there any link on microsoft.com to scan online and remove such softwares
from PC ?
please reply immediatly,
thank you,

Locking out proxy in IE
How do I create a group policy so that users in the USERS group cannot change
their proxy settings? Also, I need to create a default lock-out of those
settings, because new users log in through AD every day, and I want them to
automatically be locked out of the internet upon first logon. We cannot,
however, lock out users in the Administrators group because we need IE for
updating software.
I have found settings to modify in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER reg, but that only
applies to the user whos logged in. The key here is that new users log in
all of the time, and I need those lock-outs in place automatically while
still letting the administrator group log into and change the proxy settings.

BITS: Am I being spied?

during the day and found out that at the time of the hard disk activity,
BITS (Background Intelligent Tranfser Servcice) had transfered a 110 MB file
somewhere. From what I have learned, BITS is an operationg system utility
that is used to set up file transfers by administrators. This leads me to
wonder if somone is acquiring information from my system and transfering it
to themselves, or is it merely a routine function of the operating system. Tag: Security password Tag: 62764

Program won't install-download disappears
I am working on a friend's computer. He had a lot of viruses (a whole lot)
that I have gotten rid of. There is one virus/trojan that I can't find,
though. It is not reported by his AV. An example of the symptoms follow
(this has happened numerous times).
I tried to install a new program after downloading it from a website (this
site is a reputable one). The install starts, gets to the first or second
installation screen, then stops and installation stops (all install screens
disappear). I go to the downloaded file, to start install again and the file
is gone from the folder. It's nowhere to be found. I go to the 'Task
Manager', find what looks to be suspicious files running, and stop them. I
have even deleted these files/programs numerous times but they keep getting
reinstalled. Also, I stop any suspicious files that are in the auto-start
file.
After I restart, after stopping/deleting the suspicious files, I download
the program that I originally wanted to install again and installation goes
fine. The program works fine and all is rosy (until I return later).
But when I come back to see my friend a couple of weeks later, the above
routine starts again. It's like the offending virus/program has reinstalled
itself and is again doing whatever it is doing. Has anyone had similar
experiences of this kind? Or is anyone familiar with this scenario? Thanks
for any help. Tag: Security password Tag: 62725
