Perhaps you just reinstalled WinXP and it has a lot of updates to catch up
on.

A) Be sure your system does not have malware:

B) Suggest you flush your Automatic Updates download folder, and also =
set Automatic Updates to notify only.
Housekeeping and cleanup steps:
Bring up Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options/ select VIEW Tab and =
look at all of settings listed.

"CHECK" (turn on) Display the contents of system folders.

Under column, Hidden files and folders----choose ( *select* ) Show =
hidden files and folders.
Next, un-check Hide extensions for known file types.
Next un-check Hide protected operating system files.

Use Windows Explorer. Go to C:\Windows\System32

If you have a sub-folder called * Catroot2 * (not Catroot) rename the
folder to CR2OLD. Or delete everything in that folder. Just make sure =
you do the right one.

(to clean up downloaded files for Automatic updates / Windows Update)
From main Windows Start menu, select RUN, type in
CMD <Enter-key>=20

type in=20
net stop wuauserv <Enter-key>

Go to Windows Explorer.
Look on your system drive (usually C ) and look at the Windows folder =
name. Like Windows or WINNT.
Modify following as appropriate.
If your Windows folder is C:\Windows. Look at this folder=20
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download=20

If you find files in there, delete them. That folder is where files are =
stored from W U downloads.

Go back to Command prompt window.
type in=20
net start wuauserv <Enter-key>

EXIT <Enter-key>

Tweak your settings for Automatic Updates:=20
I'd advise, if you are using automatic updates, you configure it to =
"Notify me but don't automatically download or install them". e.g. do =
not have it on "full auto".=20

With this setting, you *must* look and follow-up on these notifications. =
Do not ignore them since at least each month there are updates that your =
system should have.

To get to your settings, highlight / single click My Computer on your =
desktop > do a RIGHT-Click > select Properties.=20
Then click on the Automatic Updates tab.=20

C) Make a visit to Windows Upate / Microsoft Update to insure you have =
all security & critical updates.

It is possible that a Microsoft patch is not able to install, or your
computer thinks it is not able to install. The next thing I usually do in
such cases is go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to see what patches
are listed as missing and to try a slightly different, more verbose method of
installing the patches. It may work and fix the problem, or it may fail and
give you a useful error message and patch name that you can then search
Google for.

If that fails, you could also look in your Windows event logs and the
wupdate.log file and others for logged information.

Thank You. I am now receiving notifications for updates without my system
shutting down. When I checked windows update, it showed that my system has
not successfully completed an update sing 9 June. Every one since then, and
they appear to be 2-3 times a day, have failed but I am unable to open them
up to see what action to take.
