When is too much home security too much?

I currently run NIS 2004,NSW 2005,Zone Alarm Pro, Ad-Aware v.6,Spy Bot
v.1.4,Spy Sweeper,Trend Micro Anti Spyware, X-Oft Spy.4 and Microsoft Anti
Spyware Beta on a home based desktop running Widows XP Pro SP2.

Is this safe or am I going overboard here?

WOW !!!
You have so many that it is really unsafe !!!!!!!!

How is Norton IS 2004 compatiable with Norton System Work 2005?????????I
don't know how this happened !Are they legal, did you paid for them both?
No matter for me!

Anyway ,now remove the unneeded so you'll have much more FREE system.

Leave only:

Norton System Work(NSW) 2005
AdAware SE Personal
Microsoft Antispyware Beta 1

Make sure your Windows Firewall is ON and set to "Don't allow exceptions"
Start->Settings->Control Panel-> Windows Firewall

You can have the control over your computer using Security Center in your
Windows XP SP 2
Control Panel-> Security Center.

Make sure you always update you softwares and never install too many ,you
really don't need them :)

Thanks Panda_man for the info.

My Symantec security software was either obtained from a local retail outlet
or by a subscription process direct to the Symantec website.

All the other programs were by download from the respective sites as freeware.

My advice is that only one antivirus or firewall program should be installed
on a system to avoid conflict.

Although I regularly get virus definition and updates automatically,I still
get spam,spyware and other nasties.

Go figure.

Hello again!

I understand all your softwares are legal which is very very good !:) ;) :)
But you really should remove one of them Nortn IS 2004 or Noron SW 2005.

I think that you can remove IS 2004 because it is the older one and because
Norton SW is the new one and also has other things that can help you.

Yes ,you should have only one firewall and antivirus so if you follow my
siggestions in my previous post ,you will have the as they should be. :)

It is very good you update regularly your definitions.

Let me answer you about the SPAM ,spyware and the other nasties.

Viruses attaches themselves to a file body so they infect a file.
Trojans are things that are malicous them selves ,the don't attach because
they are malcious
Worms spread themselves and are dangerous. You can have them via email or
like the Sasser worm via vulnerability ,if you don't have firewall

Spyware is a software/file that is installed by yourself or via another
program pretending to be good .It spys you.
Adware is advertisement spyware.
Also there are dialers ,browser hijackers ,jokes, hoaxes and many other.

There are TWO main ways you can protect yourself :

1> Always update your security software
Make sure they are always ON and configured correctly (you have them scan
ALL files ,scan compressed files ,scan for other than the viral threats ,use
heuristic or other kind of protection against unknown malware

2> Practise the so called "Safe Hex"
It is something like that:

NEVER give your email and/or passwords to strangers
Don't post your mail or passwords in forums and chats.
NEVER read email messages from people you don't know. Just delete them!!!
NEVER answer to strangers or even open the attachments,if any !!! Delete
the mail !
NEVER follow links in email from stranger and in mail that you doubt and
do not trust !
NEVER leave your mail account opened and donâ??t allow your children access it

BE CAREFUL which sites you visit
BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL what you install, especially free or shareware software.
ALWAYS check everything you download from internet with AV and AS software.

Open Outlook Express
Tools - Options - Security
Make sure you have checked these:
` Warn me when...
` Do not allow...

And something really useful:

Something additional that is essential for Norton:
As you use Norton you might want to increase your protection.
If you use Norton 2006 version ,you are already much more protected than the
old versions. However ,if you use Norton 2003,2004 or 2005 version you
probably know that Norton's Live Update offers only weekly updates which is
very very bad if there is an epidemic of new threats (such as Sober ,
Mitgleider ,Netsky ,MyDoom.........)
That's why ,if you use version 2003/2004/2005 you could be interested to
understand how to use Symantec's Intelligent Updater in combination with Live
Update:

I hope I can help you !!! :)
