 - How to reset computer to a previous date I have a problem. I deleted important downloaded files and I need to know if there is anyway I can reset my computer to the way it was a day or two ago. I believe I can because my computer wiz friend (who happens to be out of town right now) mentioned doing that before when he lost certain downloaded files. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.  - MS03-040 and LAN file copy speed Hi all; We have several Win 2000 machines and 1 XP machine here. All patched to the MS03-040 on Oct. 3. Since thew patch was applied, the XP machine *only* (Win 2000 OK) shows a severe slowdown in copying files to any other machine on the network. Have checked other "usual suspects* such as NIC card seating, cables, etc. and all seem normal. Also, communication to and from the internet via web and to and from an FTP server for website work as normal, no decrease in speed. This LAN has a hardware firewall in place, and all AV is updated daily. Spybot is used daily, as is Ad-Aware. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Tag: Securing folders Tag: 36406

 - IE6 favorites DISAPPEARS! Win2000 sp4 fully patched. No viruses. My IE6 favorites has disappeared. I usually work as a Power User account, but occasionally work as administrator. Today, I was using IE as administrator, and in fact I "Run As" IE as my Power User account but logged in as admin. Then when I logged back in as Power User, my Favorites were gone (except for an empty Links folder). I think this might be a DACL which was set as administrator, preventing me from seeing my Favorites as a PowerUser. Where is the Favorites folder for various IE user accounts?  - how to close open ports? Is there a way to close open ports in Windows OS ? I know that firewall does this but I recently downloaded Anti Trojan Scan program and I happen to have many open ports which I don't even know what they are for until I checked them out at iana.org website. If only the Service panel from the Administrator Tool tells you what service uses which port it would be easy to shut these service down. But is there a way to close open ports anyway?  - Lots of spam after taking Microsoft Survey Last month I searched the Microsoft Knowledgebase for information. After concluding my search a new IE window pops up and asks me to take a survey about my search experience. At the end of the survey I am asked if I want to join a Microsoft Research group to take more surveys and I sign up for it. I haven't received any surveys to take yet, but three days after that I started receiving bogus emails with weird email return addresses and links to programs that claim to be security patches. The email kinda looks legit except that it doesn't use the Microsoft logo, just an italic, Arial font. The language and design is very "Microsoft- ish" but the return addresses and design are very suspect. Also, Microsoft says they don't email programs or patches, just links to their support site. I'm sure it's bogus but what can I do? Why did all this happen after signing up with a Microsoft Servey service? Or does Microsoft not do that? The survey site is listed on their Premiere Vendors list. My big problem now is that I now get up to 10 of these bogus emails per day. It's on a web-based email address from Netscape, meaning complete email headers aren't there. Any suggestions on how to get rid of the junk? Microsoft - are you listening and can you help?  - How to delete xtra passport accounts? I've inadvertently made a few xtra passport accounts and in the interests of my personal security I'd like to only have one account. I've found any number of ways to edit, change, alter, etc. but none to delete or get rid of an account. Are these till death do us part?? Thanks for any help on this.  - Possible Infection/Hacker I get about 20 emails a day from diff addresses, but the same culprit, saying failure to deliver to recipient, the recipients change and they are just jumbled up letters as a name. There is no attachment, but when 1 of them opens it opens my media player and locks my system down. I have to open it in order to delete it. A bad flaw in my email service provider. I have tried to block it repeatedly but he always gets around it. Also, there was an instance when I was at a site, my site page refreshed on it's own and it came up with bogus ads that were different, wanting me to click on it to get new MSN Messenger updates. I know these were bogus because 1 ad looked like it was pasted over the original ad, as in showing 1 ad showing over and partially obscuring a bigger ad. I refreshed and the original page with the original ads appeared and those bogus ads were gone. I have scanned with the latest Norton Antivirus. I have a firewall and have scanned all ports which were closed. I scanned with SpyBot when this first started and it removed some unknown text from my registry. They all say my system is clean. These e-mails are not from Microsoft... they are bogus nasties. Delete them, pronto.  - Microsoft security downloads screwed up scanner program I went to the microsoft download center and downloaded several suggested security downloads to my windows 98 system. As soon as I did that, my scanner program stopped working. It comes up with the notice that something else is accessing the scanner. Try as I might, I cannot pinpoint what that is. I have a Gateway system and used go- back to revert the drive to a previous state, and it still will not work. Does anybody have any suggestions? I got a new USB chord, still doesn't work. It will, however, scan when I go into windows, system and double click on hpsjvxd.exe and stimon.exe. Is there any way to turn them back on and have them stay on? My scanner is an HP Scanjet 4100C.  - Explorer.exe crashes when a htm file is clicked or pointed - HELP Hi I use windows 2000 (spk3) when ever I point to a .htm file in windows explorer I get a error message saying "The instruction at 0x70dccf23" referenced memory at "0x00000000" .  - email security updates from microsoft and W32.Swen.A@mm virus I have been gettng these security updates by email from supposedly from microsoft, however, someone told me not to do any thing with them but delete them. Miscrosoft does not send sp's by email do they? I thought it was only through the windows update function. In any case is there a way to prvent these types of emails from jamming up my inbox? Also my NAV has been consistently picking up the virus W32.Swen.A@mm. I have been quarantining it and then deleting the contents of the quarantine folder, since Symantec already is aware of the virus. Can any one offer any advice?  - firewall questions Hi I just installed a firewall on my computer. At the summary in the first hour or so I've had 200 events! Two at random were both recommended that I report them to the firewall log. But at that rate I'm going to be reporting thousands of events per day! Is this a normal amount? While surfing , using any browser, many times it pops a Qs, especially during leaving login screens , "do you want to send this information unencryted form, YES/NO "....The Qs. is something of this sort and if one says no, then the page is not changed and you stuck up there itself...One has say Yes in order to change the screen... My Questions are : 1.What exactly is the meaning of this Qs?[does it mean, can somebody else watch/leakout the info] 2.How can one send the information encrypted from within the browser? 3.If i dont send the information encryted , what risk am i facing ? 4.It is said Spammers use some softwares to cull out email address from the web and do their work...  - Security Warning When sending or replyig to a message in Outlook Express, the following warning pops up. "You do not have a digital ID. If you send this message it will be sent properly but you will not be able to read it in your sent items folder. Do you wish to send anway?" I answer, "yes", then it comes up with another option which says basically the same thing and adds option to send unencrypted which I choose. Pacifier and HP say it's not their problem. Believe it is problem with Outlook Express - some checkmarked thing somewhere in the program.  - Possible Fake Emails from Microsoft I recieved two versions of the email I'm pasting below. =20 Since I've never before received an email from Microsoft,=20 I was very suspect of the email. I checked the properties=20 of the email & now I'm even more suspect. (I have=20 received Critical Update notices from Microsoft, but I've=20 never received an actual email.) Each email has a=20 different .EXE file attached. One is Q683481.exe. The=20 other is Patch.exe. The emails also contain this phrase: "The names of the=20 actual companies and products mentioned herein are the=20 trademarks of their respective owners." Since the only=20 product names mentioned in the email are MS products, why=20 wouldn't they just say these are MS trademarks? I tried to find a way to forward these two emails, with=20 attachments, direct to Microsoft to alert them, but became=20 lost in the MS online maze. I'm running W98se. windows xp? I'd like to know why microsoft doesnt include
this as a standard feature as I'm sure lots of people
would like to do it. Is there any way other than using a
3rd party prg? And if nnot, does anyone know of a free
program that does this? I already paid enough for my OS,
dont wanna pay more to secure it!

No, there is no way. Windows XP features EFS encryption for folder content
privacy - that is sufficient and provides the functionality that you're
asking for.

if you make users log in with their own accounts and disable simple file
sharing then each user will only have access to their own folders.
