Safegurds against dangerous websites??

I understand that some malicious websites can give you
viruses, worms and other bugs by just visiting them!! Is
this true? Has anyone had this experience? If its true,
is there any software which can prevent this?

Set ActiveX controls that aren't wholly unsafe to "Prompt" in the Internet
zone. Same for JavaScript. Same for file download. That sort of thing. Or
use a different browser.

Use a local proxy, such as Proxomitron.
