Hi,

Is there a way to restrict certain users or non-administrative users from
using the CD writer on the system? If possible, disable the writing
function while allowing reading.

Thanks
Ramesh

You could try to disable the Imapi Cd-burning service. Administrators would
be able to enabled it if need be but would have to disable it again when
done or they could use only admin workstations to burn stuff where only they
are allowed to logon to. You can mange services via Group Policy if you need
to do so on more than a few domain computers. --- Steve

Ramesh -

I understand that you want to limit access to the built in cd burning
software built into windows for one or more particular users. You are able
to do this
through GPEDIT.

to access: Start>Run>gpedit.msc

To turn off this feature please point your Console to:
User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows
Explorer\"Remove CD Burning Features"

Be advised if the user does not have permissions to install programs then
there will be no way for the user to burn discs. Also note, that after this
configuration is made, if the user does have perms to install software, they
can then install 3rd party burning software, such as Nero.

Alternatively, you may change the following registry key to disable the use
of the inbuilt CD recording functions of Windows XP.

User Key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explor
er]
Name: NoCDBurning
Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value: (0 = Allow CDR, 1 = Disable CDR)

I hope the information helps. If you have any other concerns, please don't
hesitate to post back

Have a great day!!!
