Does anyone have advice as to get rid of
annoying "Messenger popup" ads that frustratingly appear
at random?? I already have anti-popup software which
blocks "standard" popups but not the "Messenger" ones
which appear even if u are not online. I have Steganos
firewall installed; plus regularly run Ad-Aware to
disinfect my system, registry etc. too. I am running
Windows XP, and have already done the Administrative
Services/Services/Messenger - then "Disabled" route.
Still no joy. Would blocking any spare ports on my PC,
would that solve the problem?? Help anyone!!

It looks like you have all the protections required against
any threat you're likely to meet (except for an antivirus, which
you do not mention --- I assume it's only an omission).

First, I'd check your firewall settings. Try to block everything
(even if some programs stop working; you can reopen the
ports you need later).

Second, I'd get a list of all processes running on your system,
using the task manager, and check it against the list of programs
you have installed.

Go to administrative tools/services. Doubleclick Messenger and stop and disable this service.

* He said he had already done it.
* This is probably a symptom of a bigger security hole, which
won't be fixed by disabling the service.
* The Messenger services has other uses than popup spam.

From every experience I have had there is no "useful" use of the messenger service. We have it stopped on our entire network. Personally I have tried various pop-up blockers, but now I just use spybot, spy sweeper and ad-aware religiously as soon as I see one.

One other possibility for you Phil...

If you are talking about the MSN Messenger application:

Make sure you have the "Only people on my Allow List can see my status and
send me messages" tick box selected.
You can see this by selecting the Tools menu and clicking Options...
Then select the Privacy tab.

Some programs can use the messenger service to display notifications.

Would you be kind enough to name some?
No programs we use on 40 computers, including servers, use it.

Thanks,

All of those work for us, with messenger disabled.

Sorry, none that I use do, and I don't remember exactly which
program needed the Messenger service. I can only tell you that
they exist.
