Hi Folks,

I lurk here every day and read every post. I have read
here that a new version of Spybot is in the works.

Someone posted a link to a download site for this new
version. (Major Geeks)

I did download this new version v 1.3.RC5 but haven't yet
installed it. However, every time I go to the safer-
networking.org site lately, I've noticed there is no
mention of this new version. In fact, the site hasn't been
updated since March. The latest definitions update is from
March 9. The only download available is for v 1.2.

This seems a little odd to me. Spybot is a great product.
Probably the best of it's kind and I highly recommend it.

But my curiousity is really getting the best of me. Why no
mention of the new version or updates at the home site?

Is it possible that somehow I've been getting re-directed
to a hoax site?

Really Curious!

Ad-Aware is better.

1.3 is a *beta* version. The author probably doesn't want to bother
supporting it yet. Apparently the author doesn't even get enough donations
to allow him to get better web hosting services with higher bandwidth (to
prevent the busy error in Spybot that it doesn't handle very well).

Don't know the reason, but I have been using the newer version for several
days now and it works very well as far as I can tell. I use Adaware as well.

I'm curious too.

I've got the thing, and have scanned once with it today.

And I believe I got it from Major Geeks.

A google search on Major Geeks spybot 1.3 rc5 brings up hits, but when I
search the hits, I don't find it.

I wonder if it leaked ahead of schedule?

I went after it because of a newsgroup message, I'm reasonably sure, but I
can't figure out where I saw that now!

Hi Bill,

There was an "anouncement" type post made in the
virus.discussion group by Jim Macklin a couple of days
ago. He provided the link to Major Geeks.

I'm just wondering if this v 1.3 RC5 is the final
distribution version. RC = release candidate!

In that other post, I asked if this newer version was a
beta and the reply was no.

I have used Ad-aware but find Spybot much easier to use.

Hi Bill,
All the *beta* release candidates discussed at length here:
http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showforum=56

Patrick Kolla is busy coding away a final, it's just a matter of time as he
pretty much runs a one-man show.
Watch for the final realease announcement at the URL in my signature.

If it's any comfort,I have been running said beta
version, downloaded from majorgeeks for a few weeks
now.Absolutely no problems.
It's considerably faster than the currently released
version.If you don't mind testing beta software-give it a
try.

Hi Sadie,

Thanks for your comments, I have run previous Betas including
the current release but reverted back to the "standard" final.
I'll wait a bit and see what Patrick at SpyBot has in store for us ;)

Thanks!

I'm not averse at all to working with an RC version--and I can understand
not covering such things in the main web pages.

I don't care if you disagree; you are nothing to me.

I say Ad-aware is cleaner, more user-friendly, and updates
are regular (unlike Spybot Search & Destroy).

However, both being used is better than using one alone.

I'm not averse to Beta's either in this case, Bill, as they mostly have behaved
rather well with most users.
The coverage and discussion of the "RC's" is confined to the Net-Integration
Forum deliberately, one for bandwidth issues and the other to ensure sufficient
support as opposed to FAQ's.

Latest review in PC Week, Adaware only wins on convenience of use
(better for unsophisticated users), they tie for spyware removal (both
best of the programs tested). Spyware wins otherwise except for scanning
what is running in memory (I love Adware for that).
