    - Very frustrated...help!! Hi, I am in need of some help! I cannot access any secure websites. I can check e-mail, go to unsecure sites, etc. But whenever I try to access anything secure (bank, credit card, etc.) I get an error message saying page cannot be displayed. I've done everything I could possibly think of, and followed the troubleshooting guidelines Microsoft suggested. Also, when I try to use Windows Update, I get an error message telling me to check my date and time (which are correct). Does anyone out there have any suggestions for me?     - Cannot find server (MSN Explorer is now connected) Last week, I did the Windows Update, including the patch. Then, went to Symantec, Virus Protection and Internet Security - set to Medium. Next time I tried to log on the internet, I started having problems, I just hope that you can receive my message this way. Microsoft has intervened and filed various "error reports" - I handcopied the latest Microsoft Windows Error Signature. My fax machine is in the shop, so I can't receive faxes. Once I got a message from Norton that they had blocked an attack from "ShockRave Trojan Horse". Once MSN sent a message to update Device Drivers, but Windows Update says I don't need any. The only way that I got reconnected at all was to do a "System Restore" but, that didn't last 24 hours. Then I saw an indicator that my Norton Internet Security was disabled. I struggled to get it back on and hope it is, but at this point, I can't be sure. Last time when I was trying to get on the Internet, I got one message that something else was dialing?     - IE Home page reset problem Hi I'm a tech working in the UK. Just hit a problem with IE (W98) on a client's PC.. Client has had his home page reset by some nasty spyware. Home page 'claims' to be about:blank, but displays a semi-porn search page. OK, seen this stuff many times before, but this time... no matter what I do, the home page gets reset back to this damn page on exiting IE. So, I can use Tools>Intenet Options to reset the home page, or directly edit the 'main' keys in the registry and the home page is fine when I run IE, but as soon as I exit IE, the registry keys change and it's all back again Yes... I've run all the Updates, so his W98 and IE is patched to date. Raising the security level didn't change it either. Moreover, I can't find the page on disk that's getting loaded! I've done a containing-text search across his HDD looking for words that appear in this home-page, but the search returns nothing Any clues, anyone? I'm going grey rapidly Paul.     - have dsl need to set security for grandkids I just got dsl and love it. But the Westell dsl thing that hooks up has caused a problem I did not expect. My grandchildren can just log-on to the internet when they want to because it is always on. How can I fix my settings so that in XP when the grandkids are logged on their own account, they do not have the option to just go on line when they want to.     - WLAN PEAP (EAP-MSCHAP V2) Authentication issues. I'm trying to setup a secure WLAN. I have setup my access point to work with my Windows 2003 IAS server. The client fails to authenticate against the server. The last two parts of IAS log looks like this Packet-Type : Access-Rejec Reason-Code : Authentication was not successful because an unknown use name or incorrect password was used It is not a password or username issue. The other thing that I think is related is an error message while configuring IAS authentication methods under Protected EAP I recieve an error message "A Certificate could not be found that can be used with this Extensible Authentication Protocol".     - Windows Installer 2.0 Redistributable for Windows 95, 98, and ME Hello When I posted that I could not install Norton Personal Firewall and got a message "The MSIEXE.EXE File is Linked to Missing Export MSIDLL 222", some nice gentleman on this list informed me that I would need to install the Subject Window. I have acquired that WEB page and have read about the Overview and System Requirements. It does seem quite a daunting effort to this novice. However, my question(s) - apparently the download size is 1670KB. Will this add on to what's already there or will the Installer uninstall all that went before. In other words will the Windows Installer 2.0 start with a fresh board so to speak? Will it restore the information that I have saved and the programs that are already installed? How long is the estimated time to install this? Will I be hit with a bunch of "heady" questions such as "Do you wish to add file extensions? etc. etc. Lastly and the most important, what is the worst possible thing that can happen to my computer if things go wrong? After this new installation, will everything look, feel, and act as though nothing different happened? Sorry about the length of this but I have been this entire day talking with Norton (not much help) and then studying the Microsoft webpage. It's exhausting!! ( A gay on the net tell me that he has detected my IP/OS/IE, and it was corret, a few hours later (no more than 4 hours!), my self-defined Chinese characters in the XP Chinese input storage all gone! It appears this gay has sent some kind of package into my mechine that erase the self-defined phrases. At that point, my firewall was not ON, so cann't see anything from the log. This gay mentioned that he is a expert in JS, is it possible that one can code something in JS and sent it to a target by just knowing the target's IP/OS/IE, and perform a function, such as erasing the self-defined phrases?     - User account lock out problem I have a user who gets locked out if she tries to logon to our NT domain from any of our WinXP Pro computers. She can successfully logon to our NT domain from any NT 4 workstation. Other users can logon to both a NT 4 workstation or Win XP pro computer. What would cause this?     - Norton Firewall Setting Question Running an XP with Norton firewall.     - Home network I am setting up a small Domain at home and have a couple questions 1. Can I set up a domain controller if I am pulling a DHCP address from my ISP or do I need a static address? I managed to set up a DC and got my XP and 2K boxes to authenticate to it but could not get anything resembling an internet connection. Inside my cable modem was fine. Could get to my media server, domain controller, shared folders, blah, blah, blah, but could not get past the modem. Finally took the DC offfline and created a simple workgroup. Clients' DNS and WINS was pointing to DC (which was running both). What did I do wrong 2. I have a couple extra PCs and am wondering if it would be possble (or a good idea, even) to set up a physical firewall between my modem and my router. Do I need a quick, powerful box to run just Win2k with a firewall on it? I have two candidates, one newer and faster and one a little older and slower. Will processor speed matter, ultimately?     - Child proofing a used computer I just purchased a on PII 266 running Win98 2nd edition for my children. I want to ensure that there currently is not anything on the computer such as pictures.     - slow web access due to firewall? I have the XP firewall activated, also server(cable) firewall. Finally, Norton Security and Spam Inspector are also activated. Suddenly two days ago my computer would not load web pages. Loading was so slow that I gave up. My server had me disable the Norton, and then the situation was much better. Now, today, even with the Norton disabled, I'm still not getting the web pages I need. I tried disabling the Spam Inspector--no difference.     - Stopping folder owners from changing permissions In an existing folder a user with modify access can create a folder. That user becomes the owner of the new folder, which inturn means that they are granted full control of that folder. This means that a user has the ability to change permissions for the folder, which is not ideal because the user can then remove the Administrators access to the folder, stopping it from being backed up to tape due to the Administrator not having the permission to access the file. I know that the Admin can take back ownership but I would prefer that this situation didnâ??t happen in the first place. Also we are trying to move toward using permission groups and by allowing the user to change permissions they are able to go around this and add individuals. Is there any ways to stop the creator of a folder from gaining the ability to change permissions? I already have anti-popup software which blocks "standard" popups but not the "Messenger" ones which appear even if u are not online.     - Pop ups and "Parasites" Hello I have recently had messages stating that there is a Parasite on my system and that "this company" (I cant remember the name of this) can remove it for X amount of Dollars, I havent heard of this company before so am a little wary. Since this however, I have noticed that I have about treble the amount of Pop-ups I used to and every time I open a new web page another internet explorer window open and says on the task bar ~Close then disappears. This has obviouslly effected the speed of my connection. I have Norton Virus checker and reguarlly update virus definitions and do full system scans I have even tried deleting all off line temp files and cookies and looked for "strange" new files or directory created in the last month to no avail??     - Weird Entries in System and Security Logs, With Sygate PF Failures Hi everyone I've been having troubles recently (the past 2 weeks or so) with Sygate personal firewall crashing unexpectedly, and no error message is given. At first I thought it was a software conflict of some kind. But now I'm thinking that there is a exploit out there that will bring down Sygate. I am finding that SPF is crashing only when this bad inbound traffic is occuring. Many times it blocks incoming stuff, but fairly often my firewall will die without warning. These bad packets are hitting me on a variety of ports, but 5000 seems to be the most commonly used. 0, 80, and 113 are also used fairly often. The remote ports from which the connection attepts originate are high-numbered I have seen .dll requesters pop up, asking for permission, and within seconds of their appearance, they disappear again, and the Sygate program is no longer running. The icon for SPF remains in the lower right, but it goes away if I move the mouse pointer over it. Yesterday this happened twice in a row, in rapid succession. (The request was something about a remote initiated connection attempt to load .dll files relating to Windows help) Here is some info from my event log. Most of this I don't really understand, but perhaps it has something to do with SPF crashing all the time. Maybe there isn't an exploit out there, but I have a misconfiguration on my machine In the System log, there is an entry from today saying the Service Control Manager is giving me an Error, and the Event ID is 7034. It says "The Sygate Personal FIrewall service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 2 time(s)." I've tried looking around a bit, but I haven't found anything that explains what Event ID 7034 is, and WHY Sygate is crashing. The Event Viewer for this System log entry says a file named netevent.dll is involved, version 5.1.2600. In my Security log, there are a few entries I also don't understand. These entries were created shortly after I logged on, before connecting to the net.     - SecTemps and Special Permissions I'm working with a security template that assigns new permissions to files and folders on my XP Pro system. On most of the folders the Administrators group is given Full Control via Special Permissions (the Advanced button on the Security tab), but the general permissions are left blank. When I try to access any of those folders (after applying the template) as an Administrator, I'm denied. Why is this happening? What is the difference between Special and regular permissions? Why won't special permissions work without regular permissions? I can correct this by adding in Full control for Administrators under the general permission settings in the template, but I'm curious as to why this is the way it is.     - My GINA have some problem when I install sp4 I have written a GINA DLL to full instead of msgina.dll. It work well on windows2000 which is not been installed any service pack. But there are some problem after I install sp4,and the same on windows XP. The problem is:when I open star menu, the current menu isn't change when I move mouse. And when I start some programs, for example UltraEdit, the "C++ Runtime Library error " appearance. I found the programs which appearance this error will load the msvcrt.dll.     - has someone hacked in to my computer? Whenever I attempt to shut down my computer, I get a pop- up message that says "Someone is logged on to your machine. Are you sure you want to log off?"     - allowing READ only, no printing, no saving to desktop and no ability to attach On our Network we have many "shared" folders. These are usually word doc's, excel, sometimes PDF files. The problem is even if I give a user READ only access they still have the ability to copy the file to thier desktop, print it or burn it to a CD orcopy floppy OR even browse to it on the network and attach it in an email. How do I create a TRUE "READ ONLY" access where 98% of the users can actually ONLY READ the documents and do not have ANY ability to copy it print it save it anywhere and certainly not browse to it on the Network and attach it in an email and send it out of the company.     - Disabling Local Security Policy Hi folks; I've been reading up on Local Security Policy. However, in a blight of pure genuis, I've locked myself out of being able to add printers and device drivers, as well as disabling the ability for me to change the time. The latter I can deal with, however, for some odd reason, I can't add device drivers or local printers. I'm logged in as an administrator, however, that still doesn't help. When I look in the Local Security Policy area, they've got no user names in the area that shows who or what is allowed to Load/Unload Device Drivers, and who is allowed to change the system time. I've heard that you can add a registry key to disable the Local Security Policy on a Temp. basis, however, I've not been able to find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I get a popup repeatedly that says the computer has commited a prohibited act and will shut down. I doesn't shut dow, but I'm tired of having to kill the popup every few minutes...What's going on and how do I "fix" it. I'm running windows 96 and IE version

It's not the computer, it's a program that is doing something
that won't work. Look more closely at the title bar and you'll
see which program is affected. Either it has a bug
(programming error), or it is damaged. In the later case,
reinstalling the program may fix your problem.

Can you carify whether it actually reads :"..has
performed an illegal action"? (Old Windows version
bug,but only the app will shutdown,not the whole
computer.)

If,however,the wording on this pop-up is indeed:"commited
a prohibited act",I would strongly suggest you post a
