I backed up the hard drive to my previous computer to
CD. This was done in an XP environment, therefore I
believe it was protected to only be read by that computer.

Now that I have my new laptop, I can only detect that the
storage space is being used, but cannot see the files.
Is there anyway possible to unlock the CD and access the
files?

How did you back it up? Can you not see the contents of the CD in Windows
Explorer?

What OS are you running on the new computer? As Lanwench correctly pointed
out, it is important to know exactly what software you used to create the CD
(and perhaps what options for that software)

Since you mention XP and you thought the contents were protected, perhaps
you are using EFS?? ugh.

...awaiting more info

I used the CD software that was on my previous leased
system. When using Windows Explorer I can see that 81
megs have been used on the CD, but it shows no files.
This is why I concluded that it was saved with only that
system being able to read it. I need to know if I can
somehow circumvent that priority save and recover my data.

I am running XP on the new computer. I really do not
remember the CD software that the former system used. It
was the day that I was returning two leased systems and
was backing up at the last minute. I know that XP
factors in because I couldn't access the CD at several
other computers not running XP as an OS. Although, when
I purchased the new computer with XP the drive was
accessible and readable. Windows Explorer acknowledges
that 81 megs are used, but displays no files. Any
suggestions?
