I received an e-mail from "Microsoft" today with the
heading "Urgent Virus Update-Open Now!"---Needless to say
I did not open them. THere were 2 sent at the same time.

Microsoft will not send e-mails like this--do NOT open
any e-mails that are tagged Microsoft unless you are 100%
sure it is not a virus!

FYI.

Microsoft never sends patches via email.

Only reply by newsgroup. If I see an email I didn't ask for, it will be
deleted without reading.

Does this mean that the email that I received this morning
with a virus in the attachment is not from Microsoft?

It absolutely does!!

If you executed the attachment, I'd recommend disconnecting from any network
and the Internet, and shutting the machine down.

Monitor this group and microsoft.public.virus from a different machine to
see how this is identified and what cleaning tools are available.

My anti-virus program quarantined it, so no problems. It
pays to have anti-virus!!! It has saved me many times.
Thanks.

Terrific--there's a new one out there today with very convincing HTML, and
not registering on some antivirus definitions--glad yours did.
