Hi:

I have Windows XP Pro, with Norton Virus protection, I have ran the stinger
programs offered by McAfee, and have all the windows XP security updates.

My Outlook seems to be sending unwanted and unarthorized e-mails (spam) out
to various people who have the same e-mail @xxx.com as I do. The name Harry,
geradine, etc, appears outside the bracketts in which show my name and e-mail
address as the perso who is sending it. I have check the properties of the
mails that are being baounced back, and the properites state the the mails
are from the "Microsoft Outlook Embeded folder. When I run a search for this
folder, the search window shows not files within it, but the information
shown on the upper left corner of the search window states that 122 files
have been found.

I would like to stop this from happening, but none of my virus scans
indicate that there is anything wrong.

Any help here would be apprieciated.

Stinger is a very limited first-line antivirus tool and only useful for
those few (under 50) targeted viruses/trojans. Go through the
preparatory steps here:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Start by scanning with either Sysclean or Multi_AV, plus Ewido. Do all
prep/finishing work and follow instructions to do all scans in Safe
Mode. Then run the rest of the general malware removal steps.

When all else fails, run HijackThis and post your log in one of the
specialty forums listed at the link above (not here, please).

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

These emails almost certainly aren't really coming from your email or your
computer. It is very very easy for spammers and viruses to forge anyone's
email address, and they usually do. There's nothing you can do to stop
these undeliverable emails, you can only delete them and ignore them when
they come in. Everyone has been getting these kinds of emails for years.

Are you sure they were sent by you ?
Do they appear in your sent folder ?

If not, it most probably is that your email address is being used for the purpose of
obfuscating their true source.

There are some old (2+years) worms that McAfee doesn't pick up. I don't
know if Norton picks them up. However, I do know that Panda Anti-Virus
does. You can use the on-line scanner at
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan to scan your system. At least one
of these worms will send via SMTP from your system using your Outlook
configuration for return address information.

The Mark M. indicated he ran Stinger not the full blown VirusScan product and is using NAV.
Stinger has a small subset of ~53 infectors whiles the full product is at ~207,000 targeted
infectors and variants.

If there are 2 yr. old Internet worms that McAfee does NOT recognize, they should be
subitteed to WebImmune ASAP.

https://www.webimmune.net/default.asp

Since there are so many Internet worms in the wild I truly doubt those two unidentified
worms are at the haert of Mark M.'s problem. It is more likely that his email address in
the the address book of someone who IS infected and that malware is using his name as the
sender. This is nothing new and is actually quite common.
