Can anyone recommend which of the two programmmes in the subject line is the
easiest and most reliable?
I hope to back-up my entire hard drive contents to an external hard drive so
I can "re-install" if things go badly wrong.
I'm looking for ease of use and reliability only.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks Chrisss.......

Ive only had experience with Ghost and for the most part its very reliable
and pretty easy to use.

Please let me add that my computer is for home use only and is not
networked.
I'm using Windows XP with SP2.
My external hard drive has a USB 2 connection.
Cheers, Chrissss......

I still vote for Ghost, too. Save your drive to a Ghost Image file and burn
the image file to a CD or DVD. You can even put a copy of Ghost on the
CD/DVD. Then you can easily restore right from the disk if you have to. A
basic install of the old NT4 Workstation I've restored using a CD took only
2.5 minutes once the process began. That is how I rebuild our old NT
machines and I never have to worry about hunting down old device drivers and
stuff.

Thanks Phil,
I have never been keen on writing to CDs or DVDs as I have found them
unreliable. That's why I really want to save everything to my external hard
drive. Can I still do this?

yes you can.. However Im inclined to ask.. This is so you have a copy of your
OS with your program files installed right?

There is nothing to choose betwen the two programs. I prefer True Image as
it always has been far more user friendly although I believe the more recent
versions of Ghost have been playing 'catch up'. From a functional point of
view both will do what you want.

Yes indeed. I want every single thing on my C drive to be saved.
I have been doing backups for My Docs, e-mails etc, for ages, but have
always found it a nightmare re-installing all my programmmes and settings
etc. So I'm hoping to be able to start from scratch in one simple operation
to set up my computer the way it was before the last disaster!
Cheers, Chrissss.....

The nice thing about Acronis is that it's really simple to "open" the backup
& mount it as a virtual drive - and extract/restore only specific things if
you want them. I don't know whether this is possible with Ghost - I have
only ever used Ghost's corporate version for mass workstation rollouts.
