In the tray, bottom right of screen with time and date, is
a new logo I have not installed. It looks like a computer
screen logo. Placing the pointer over the logo announces
it as a newly discovered device labeled as UPnP Device.
Right clicking over the device gives the choices of
creating a shortcut or invoking but the delete and
properties choices are grayed out and do not operate. The
device logo can also be found on My Network Places but
again properties and delete cannot be used. I will not
invoke the logo but I cannot get rid of it. Any
suggestions? Thanks

This is a UPnP device, such as a home/small office router.

If I'm reading your address correctly, you are on Cable?

UPnP broadcasts should be restricted to within your household by the cable
modem, but many cable modems predate UPnP functionality--at least I think
that's the explanation.

At any rate--if you don't have such a device, this is a device at someone
elses house "close" to you in the cable system, being discovered by UPnP on
your machine. It isn't any harm to you, although it may be an annoyance.
If you do discover that you can access it, that could be harmful to its
owner!

You might consult with your cable provider--perhaps this can be fixed with a
firmware update to the cable modem.

The highly respected Gartner Group has said that they
expect hackers to incorporate the UPnP vulnerabilities
into their attack tools by the end of the first quarter of
2002

Will give you more information

Calling the diatribes at this site "information" is understatement.

All of this material is nearly two years old, and it hasn't happened.

Show me something about this from a respected source with this years date on
it?
