A good friend of mine died and having been the finacial
person of the family and had everything on the computer,
his wife is having trouble getting access to this
information.

He had a folder in my documents named "MyMoney" that we
can't open. She believes it's all of their information
but it won't open. It simply says that it's too large for
notepad to open. Can anyone give me any clues on how to
go about opening something like this? If not, please
direct me to someone who could. Thanks so much for your
time. Darol Wester

Notepad opens only text documents. If MyMoney is a
folder, you only need to double-click on it to open it.

If it is encrypted (in XP) then you will need password
top access it.

Also search for a program called Microft Money (or any
money/finance related programs). Most likely this program
will be the one that created this folder and will access
the files within.

We did get it to open a window but all that was there was
a bunch of jibberish of letters and numbers, and lots of
it. It has a notepad icon in my documents just above
MyMoney.

How would you go about using Microsoft Money to access
this file? Is there a place in MM that will walk me
through it? Thanks again. I appreciate the help. Darol

Darol;
Try a "money" newsgroup for the best answer.

Darol,

From your description it appears that you are not very
familiar with computers either. It is very difficult to
handhold to such an extent in a forum line this. What you
need is someone more knowledgeable to do it for you in
person. I suggest you find a teenager in the family to
help you.

All the best.

Thanks for the help. Always appreciated.

Dear SFB. I have a couple of ideas what your initials
stand for but I won't mention them. Also, you might want
to go back to school and work on your spelling.
Who knows, it might improve your attitude.

If your spelling in English, French, German, Dutch, Russian and Bulgarian,
which are the languages I speak,
will be as bad as mine I wonder what you will think about a remark like
this.

Dear Darol,

First of all, my simpathy for your friend.

I must advise you to try to solve your problem according to the law (and
advise all people in this newsgroup to do the same).

This means you have to contact an attourney (or your friends attourney)
first and only afterwards deal with the problem of accessing someone else's
PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL finantial files.

What you're asking is very strange as you might understand.

Regards,
damned

Damed, I can appreciate your thoughts. I'm just trying to
help a life long friend in hard times. I am the trusted
one at this point. If it was a problem with her she
wouldn't be asking me. Surely we all have a friend like
this and would do the same.

Hello
First, I'm sorry to hear about your friends death.

I think I may have found the solution. You said it is in My Document, if
you go to START, then up to MY DOCUMENTS, right click and select PROPERTIES,
then SHARING, there is a box there to check, if you want to make this folder
"private". Above that it says, To share this folder with other users of this
computer only, drag it to the SHARED DOCUMENTS folder.
Let me know if it works.

Donna J.

Place your cursor over the MyMoney icon. Single
click the right mouse button. From the resulting list,
move your cursor to the bottom, so that the
word "Properties" is highlighted. Click the left mouse
button. On the resulting informational window, look for
the entry that follows the words "Type of file". If that
entry is "Application", you will need to find the
application that created the file, and to use that
application to open the file. On the bright side, if the
file is an application, chances are good that it has been
created using one of the programs that are present on the
machine, making opening it simply a matter of time
wherein you try and open it with each program the machine
has (assuming it isn't encrypted). I'd start by looking
for money related programs (Excel etc)
If you are lucky, the type of file is not an
application, but rather a simple text document. You said
that it was too large for notepad to open. Word can
handle large text files, so you might try that. You can
download a free program "Textpad" that opens large text
files at
http://www.textpad.com/
