The router in a default configuration will protect you from uninitiated inbound
traffic from the internet which by far is the biggest threat and may also be
able to control outbound access to some degree. Software firewalls can further
protect by allowing controlling all outbound access even mapping firewall rules
to MD hash protected applications. Software firewalls however are easier to
misconfigure and are subject to failure due to certain attacks or software
conflict though they certainly are an extra layer of security and if you wish to
use one on a network you can configure your lan subnet to be in the "trusted"
zone [which would include the router lan side]. The trusted zone could then be
configured to allow all traffic or certain traffic. Personally I do not use
software firewalls on my home lan of ten computers and never have a problem.
However I am good at keeping all critical updates current and using an up to
date virus scan that scans all email attachments, and harden my Internet
Explorer settings. --- Steve
