I downloaded the latest 3MB+ security patch for Windows 98
and it screwed up my ActiveX settings and caused several
subscription programs to become useless. I had to use my
recovery software to go back in time and remove the
update. I tried to report the problem to Microsoft, but it
appears it could cost me between $20 - $35 to report their
problem back to them.

Resetting the Active X security options under
Internet/Tools/Security did not work.

Hope this serves as a warning and keeps some of you from
suffering.

Thanks,
Susan

MS no longer fully supports Win98. It's old, insecure,
and vulnerable. I would suggest that you move on to a new
mor robust OS, Windows 2000 or XP. The quality of the
support and patches MS provides for a discontinued product
is probably not as good as its flagship products.. just
my opinion as a fellow user....

If your OS is retail - i.e. not an OEM supplied copy, you can call Microsoft
at 1-866-pcsafety and get direct support for security and virus related
issues. Your issue would definitely qualify.

I've put in all the current patches on a number of '98 machines and not seen
this issue, but they weren't being used for the kinds of things you mention.

Yes. Definatly go to XP. It's NEW, insecure, and vulnerable. M$
stopped supporting 98 because they knew to many people would tell them
where they could shove XP and revert back. Can't have that now can
we..
