I am running Win98 and I occasionally get the familiar message 'illegal
operation - windows will be shutdown etc..' when I look at the details, it
shows me the problem file as 'Kernel32.dll'. I recently downloaded Spybot,
Ad-Aware, ETrust (I have been trying to clean my pc of malware).

Does anyone know what this dll is? Any comments would be greatly
appreciated.

kernel32.dll contains a large part of the Win32 API (file handling, memory
allocation, etc).

Your problem is not necessarily caused by kernel32.dll, even if the error
occurs at some point in it.
