On XP Home Edition computer: Did Windows Update, but it
failed towards the end. Now it disconnects dialup
connection every time I try to scan for updates on Windows
Update page. In event logs, there is a Failure Audit,
event ID 615, "IPSec Services failed to get the complete
list of network interfaces on this machine...", followed
one second later by an Information event that the
connection to the ISP was disconnected. This is the best
clue I have as to what is going wrong -- now I just need
to figure out how to put it right?

Barb. It is very hard to say what the problem is. However since you are using XP, you
should try to restore your system to a previous state where it worked fine. See
Knowledge Base article below to see instructions. --- Steve

The IPSEC services are used by the Internet Connection Firewall. A
problem with your dialup connectoid or ICF is causing trouble with IPSEC
and ICF and eventually causing the connection to disconnect.

I would recommend you recreate your dial-up connectoid and if that
doesn't work, disable, reboot and enable ICF on your existing
connectoid.
