It sounds like you have a conflict with another startup
program/service/driver. If you can start in safe mode without a problem that
is almost certainly the case. If safe mode works you can use msconfig to
disable startup services and programs to troubleshoot and then to find the
particular offending process you will have to selectively disable start up
processes in a trial and error manner. You don't state the operating system
but if it is Windows 2000 or XP Pro look in Event Viewer to see if there are
any helpful clues. Msconfig is included in most operating systems other that
Windows 2000. If you search the internet for " msconfig download " you will
be able to find a copy for Windows 2000. When installing any software always
unload any running applications such as those shown by the icons in the
lower right hand corner. If you right click an icon there is usually an
option to exit the application. If one is a software firewall protecting you
from the internet be sure to unplug your network cable from the back of the
computer before doing such.
I would also scan the computer for parasites and viruses to see if there is
a problem with that. There are free tools you can download for such. AdAware
SE is great for parasites. Be sure to update it before you run it which you
can after you open it. Then scan your computer with Sysclean and the current
pattern files from Trend Micro. They are free and you just need to download
both to the same folder to execute from. Also see the last link on basic
security procedures to protect your computer. --- Steve
