        • NT 4.0 Server and XP OS internet access only I have a situation with a client where a 1st floor location has 3 pc that were removed from router access via mac address exclusion. They need a forth one to connect only to the internet. I can setup another PC and lock it out of the NT 4.0 network but the problem is these employees problably know the password for the volunteer users in the upstairs office and that would by pass login protection settings to keep them off the network. I need a PC locked down only accessing the internet so I they can go anywhere on the net and not but the network in harms way. I was wondering if XP pro OS has any features that would lock the system down to only getting onto the net and not allow any other password logins. Thanks for any help. • Problem with accessing saved files after using a restore point! Hi, I have restored my XP environment to the first system restore point. XP automatically saved the previous user account information. In the Admin account I created, before moving back to the restore point, are still some important emails I want to retrieve. However XP doesn't allow me access to these folders, even under the system admininstrator account. Does anyone ahve an idea on how to bypass this "access denied" problem? Thanks, Marcus Tag: 2 Hard Drives Tag: 43459

        • Surrendering Administrator Account? Hi guys, I would like to have some opinion on this. Recently we are doing some security audit and my boss said that we should surrender our Domain Administrator ID and keep the password in a safe. Other than using Domain Administrator to join PC /servers to domain, performing administrative tasks, etc, how can I convince my boss that it is essential for System Administrator like us to be responsible and keep the Domain Adminstrator account and password to ourselves? Hear from you guys soon! Best Regards. Tag: 2 Hard Drives Tag: 43440

        • Windows security updates notice As soon as I got online today, a Windows Messenger message popped up, stating I needed to click on the enclosed link to download a security fix--something about a winpatch.net-something-or-other. Do you send security notices via Windows Messenger? I'm not familiar with Win. MSNGR. cause I've never received messages from it before this PC I recently got (I have AOL.) And the few I've gotten on here were from people I don't know--one was an ad; two were from the same person (same gender as me)on different days saying that a friend of mine (doesn't give name)says I'm cool. Well, I'm 50, married with 2 grown kids--so I doubt that! I just closed all these messages including the "security" one today. I did a search for it on MSN's security site, which found nothing--'course I couldn't remember the whole name accurately. Yesterday I had to reinstall Win XP and everything else that came with this PC after it crashed (couldn't get it to do a recovery--something about an NDRLT file missing), and I re-acquired Automatic Update but it wasn't til today that it's stating I need to get a lot of updates (which I do recognize from the 1st time.) It didn't start showing this til AFTER I got and closed the Win Mssgr. message. I just checked the Updates list and there's nothing on it about winpatch.net-whatever. I'm confused, so please email me a reply ASAP, and also tell me what I should acquire from the website that will be able to decipher the genuineness of something for me. Thank you. • Am I being hacked? For the second time in a week, I am locked out of .NET Passport because of too many sign-in attempts with incorrect passwords. What worries me is that I haven't made any sign-in attempts prior to the one that told me I am locked out (same as the event earlier this week). What might be causing this? If someone is trying to hack my sign-in, what steps should I take? Thanks in advance for any help. Tag: 2 Hard Drives Tag: 43432

        • PC-Cillin Just wondering if anyone has any comments on PC-Cillin from Trendmicro. I used their site to fix 3 viruses that Norton didn't ever pick up. Wondering if their software is as good as the rest. Norton didn't pick up the viruses at all, McAfee did, but wanted to charge for everything but the free scan. If am impressed and feel a bit obligated now to use this product from Trendmicro since I am needing to re-subscribe to some form of protection, and since they were the only site that truly fixed me up from my troubles. Thanks. Chad Tag: 2 Hard Drives Tag: 43428

        • Computer Protection I have just gone through the headache of being infected with 3 viruses which Norton didn't pick up at all. The McAfee and TrendMicro.com sites both did. I got a free fix tool from the trendmicro site through their housecall feature. They sell a program titled "PC-Cillin." I am wondering if anyone has used this or know if it's any good versus McAfee and Norton? I'd like to use their product since they were the ones that detected my viruses and fixed them for free, but not if the software isn't as good as others. Thanks. Chad Tag: 2 Hard Drives Tag: 43424

        • nachi worn and reinstallation I did a reformat and reinstallation of Win XP last night and this morning, when I hooked up the Net and download McAfee Virusscan, it told a few minutes later after installing the Windows Updates that it detected the Nachi worm and deleted it. Now, this is the second time this happened to me, and the first time was when I bought Win XP and installed it on a reformatted drive. I did some research on McAfee about the worm, but I still have one question: Is this worm present on my system when I reinstall Win XP or do I become instantly affected when I hook up to the Net? I didn't do anywhere on the Net except on MSN site and McAfee. I also have another hard drive hooked up as a slave, but it only contains music files. Could that be the culprit also? • Great Way to Make Money....Legally! GREAT WAY TO MAKE MONEY-READ THIS!!!!! Iâ??ll make you a promise. READ THIS INFORMATION TO THE END! - follow what it says to the letter - and you will not worry whether a RECESSION is coming or not, who is President, or whether you keep your current job or not. HOW TO TURN £6 INTO £6,000!!!!!! For our North American friends send equivalent dollars instead of pounds READING THIS COULD CHANGE YOUR LIFE! I found this on a bulletin board and decided to try it. A little while back, I was browsing through newsgroups, just like you are now, and came across an article similar to this that said you could make thousands of dollars within weeks with only an initial investment of £6.00! So I thought, Yeah right, this must be a scam, but like most of us, I was curious, so I kept reading. Anyway, it said that you send £1.00 to each of the 6 names and address stated in the article. You then place your own name and address in the bottom of the list at #6, and post the article in at least 200 newsgroups. (There are thousands) No catch, that was it. So after thinking it over, and talking to a few people first, I thought about trying it. I figured: what have I got to lose except 6 stamps and £6.00, right? Then I invested the measly £6.00. Well GUESS WHAT!!... within 7 days, I started getting money in the mail! I was shocked! I figured it would end soon, but the money just kept coming in. In my first week, I made about £25.00. By the end of the second week I had made a total of over £1,000.00! In the third week I had over £10,000.00 and itâ??s still growing. This is now my fourth week and I have made a total of just over £42,000.00 and itâ??s still coming in rapidly. Itâ??s certainly worth £6.00, and 6 stamps, I have spent more than that on the lottery!! Let me tell you how this works and most importantly, why it works....Also, make sure you print a copy of this article NOW, so you can get the information off of it as you need it. I promise you that if you follow the directions exactly, that you will start making more money than you thought possible by doing something so easy! Suggestion: Read this entire message carefully! (print it out or download it.) Follow the simple directions and watch the money come in! Itâ??s easy. Itâ??s legal. And, your investment is only £6.00 (Plus postage) IMPORTANT: This is not a rip-off; it is not indecent; it is not illegal; and it is virtually no risk - it really works!!!! If all of the following instructions are adhered to, you will receive extraordinary dividends. PLEASE NOTE: Please follow these directions EXACTLY, and £50,000 or more can be yours in 20 to 60 days. This program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants. Please continue its success by carefully adhering to the instructions. You will now become part of the Mail Order business. In this business your product is not solid and tangible, itâ??s a service. You are in the business of developing Mailing Lists. Many large corporations are happy to pay big bucks for quality lists. However, the money made from the mailing lists is secondary to the income which is made from people like you and me asking to be included in that list. Here are the 4 easy steps to success: STEP 1: Get 6 separate pieces of paper and write the following on each piece of paper; PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST. Now get 6 £1.00 coins and tape ONE inside EACH of the 6 pieces of paper so that its stable and l will not be seen through the envelope (to prevent thievery). Next, place one paper in each of the 6 envelopes and seal them. You should now have 6 sealed envelopes, each with a piece of paper stating the above phrase, your name and address, and £1.00. What you are doing is creating a service. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL! You are requesting a legitimate service and you are paying for it! Like most of us I was a little skeptical and a little worried about the legal aspects of it all. So I checked it out with the Post Office and they confirmed that it is indeed legal! Mail the 6 envelopes to the following addresses: #1) N.Lamy 178 Elm St. Sudbury ON P3C 1T7 London SW 16 6LY #2 M. Michel 188 Caswell Dr. Sudbury ON P3E 2N8 #3) Gerry P. Manager 469 Bouchard St. Suite 220 Sudbury ON P3E 2K8 #4) Renée S. Leamay 4 Robert Speck Parkway Mississauga Ontario L4Z 1S1 #5) Nick Dechamplain 4408 Chenier Street Hanmer ON P3P 1L9 #6) Gerry Lamy 4545 Dennie St. Hanmer, ON P3P 1L1 STEP 2: Now take the #1 name off the list that you see above, move the other names up (6 becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc...) and add YOUR Name as number 6 on the list. STEP 3: Change anything you need to, but try to keep this article as close to original as possible. Now, post your amended article to at least 200 newsgroups. (I think there are close to 24,000 groups) All you need is 200, but remember, the more you post, the more money you make! This is perfectly legal! If you have any doubts, refer to Title 18 Sec. 1302 & 1341 of the Postal lottery laws. Keep a copy of these steps for yourself and, whenever you need money, you can use it again, and again. PLEASE REMEMBER that this program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants and by their carefully adhering to the directions. Look at it this way. If you are of integrity, the program will continue and the money that so many others have received will come your way. NOTE: You may want to retain every name and address sent to you, either on a computer or hard copy and keep the notes people send you. This VERIFIES that you are truly providing a service. Some of the participants in your list may very well become life-long friends! Remember to include your family and friends, the idea is for everyone to profit from this wonderful opportunity. MOST OF ALL: This program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of participants like you. Please continue its success by carefully adhering to the instructions. • Safe XP Security Downloads? What Free internet security downloads on CNET.com are safe and useful for XP? Some are Spybot Search & Destroy, SpyHunter, Ad-aware, ZoneAlarm 4.5.538--safe for XP? A couple reviews said Ad-aware would NOT allow the Restore/recovery option. Would any of these above programs allow safe surfing w/o spyware on Kazaa or related peer to peer music sharing websites? • trojan? Hi, a friend of mine has booked a ticket for a concert and a few minutes later it was booked again. When he complained to the ticket-company and said that he only ordered one ticket and asked why they charged him two, they said that it was booked twice. When they checked their log-file, they found that one was ordered from my computer. But to do so, I would have had needed my friends log-in, his PIN and his bank account. Now he is really pissed off at me and thinks I spyed in his stuff, which I definitely didn't. However, there is no question that the order was sent from my computer. Now my question: Since I know I definitely didn't do this and noone else has access to my computer - is there any kind of virus that can do things like that? Like a trojan virus or anything that scans computers which I have a connection to (via FTP), spys out passwords and then completes actions like booking something the other person did just a second ago? If there is a Virus like that, please tell me. My anti-virus hasn't found anything, but I know I didn't betray my friend and I don't want our friendship to be ruined. So I am looking for an explanation... Thanx, Steph PS: Please excuse my english. reply to stephanie_pesch@yahoo.de Tag: 2 Hard Drives Tag: 43381

        • are downloads scanned? I am wondering if downloads are scanned for viruses, spyware etc etc. My AV software seems to intercept most e mail threats and my firewall seems to protect me against direct intrusion but when I run my spyware program I nearly always have something lurking, a tracking cookie or some other such thing, how do these things get passed all of the security? Whenever I get an attachment in an e mail, my e mail prog firstly warns me that the attachment might contain something nasty, I then save the attachment to my desktop and run a virus scan on it before I open it, am I doing the right thing? • Disappearing Patch KB824146 Following instructions from Microsoft I downloaded and installed the KB824146 Security Update (Blaster patch) on my new computer. I checked in the Add or Remove Programs folder and noted that Windows XP Hotfix - KB824146 was listed as an installed program. Then I went to WindowsUpdate website, had my computer scanned and downloaded all 13 required Critical Updates. When I checked the Add or Remove Programs folder I noted the 13 new Windows XP Hotfixes, but that Windows XP Hotfix - KB824146 was no longer listed as an installed program. Why is that? Is there a more recent update which I must have downloaded and which replaced KB824146 so that it's no longer in my system? Or should I reinstall KB824146? Twice I tried talking to someone on the Microsoft 1-800- PCSAFETY number, but they could not help! Someone advised me that I should have disabled my Norton Antivirus software when I downloaded the Windows Critical Updates, but I cannot get anyone at Microsoft to confirm or deny that. • general security help The FBI has been harassing and mentally torturing me for two and half years since around Oct 01. The FBI has installed gps tracking devices in my car, tracked me like an animal, wire tapped my phone and has been monitoring all my web surfing activities for 2.5yrs and completely dehumanized me. The FBI agents have been following me 24X7X60X60 everywhere including grocery stores, retail stores, malls, restaurants and movie theaters. The FBI agents who were following me have at times verbally and racially abused me in retail store and grocery store parking lots by shouting at me inanities. One FBI agent once tried to ram into my car from behind with a comcast van and came within one inch of hitting me from behind. There was no traffic altercation between us and there was no traffic on the road. The FBI agent in the comcast van never tried to overtake me and was very angry at me and hated me for no reason. I have been unemployed for close to 3 yrs and When I send resumes to potential employers, the sadistic FBI agents who were monitoring my email and websurfing, have been badmouthing and assasinating my character with recruiters and jeopardizing my job opportunities for the last 2.5 yrs. The FBI has been interfering in my personal life for no reason. The FBI has completely destroyed and denied me any sort of privacy for 2.5 yrs. Each and every word I type and post on the web is being monitored and each and every email tapped. The sadistic FBI has forced me to live like a virtual prisoner for 2.5 yrs with zero privacy and 24 hr real time video focused on me. I cant talk to friends, family members and prospective employers without the fear of being over heard and recorded. I am afraid of doing everything and anything without fear. I am not a terrorist. I am not even a muslim. I dont have any muslim friends. I am not a drug smuggler. I did not kill anybody. I did not threaten to kill anybody. I dont have a record like gottis or escobars. I do not have any prior criminal record. Why should I suffer all this harassment and constant loss of privacy for such an extended period of time. I feel completely naked infront of the world and it has been like that for a couple of years. I am not familiar with US legal system that much. Can somebody tell me why the sadistic FBI has such ridiculous amount of power to harass and mentally torture me. WHy do the FBI has the right to think they are God and they are always right. WHy should my life depend on what the FBI thinks of me. Why should I be put through so much pain and suffering. Why do the FBI has the right to deny me privacy for so long. Who gave the FBI the right to interfere in my personal life and bad mouth and assasinate my character with potential employers. Why are the FBI agents telling employers not to hire me. As it is, it is very difficult to find a job in this economy and whatever few opportunities I get are being screwed by these fbi sadists. On what basis, the FBI installed a gps device in my car and tracking me like an animal. On what basis did the FBI wire tap my phone. On what basis did the FBI tap and monitor my web activities and email for 2.5 yrs. I feel as if I was put in a 6x6 cell with 24X7 video focused on me and fbi agents standing around the cell and constantly poking me with sticks. One undercover FBI agent sent an email and called me a dumbass. His email is sfrank9@aol.com and his ebay id is spodekmodek. Lot of FBI agents are harrassing me 24X7 in vehilces with michigan title plates UFX 210 (white SUV), XRA 155 (black car), BOGEY 27 (black car), PPL 587 (red car). Assume everything I said is true and somebody with legal knowledge and expertise help me out here. I do not have access to us.legal and misc.legal usenet news groups. I would appreciate if somebody can do a cut and paste this into us.legal and misc.legal news groups. Tag: 2 Hard Drives Tag: 43337

        • Norton Firewall, NavW32.exe....crash. I'm clearly an ignoramus, so I'll need simple answers. I'm afraid. I have all the Norton AV stuff installed on my laptop, including Internet Security 2003. (I recently heard that this can cause problems, by the way) Anyway, I recently noticed that everything was slowing down, and seemed to be behaving oddly(I had several windows open, including an msn messenger conversation) And at the same time I found an irritating messge kept popping up, telling me that NavW32.exe (a Norton file) was attempting to access the internet. I don't remember seeing that one before. I clicked permit, then permit again... then finally got so annoyed I blocked, and then created a rule to block, just to stop that infernal message fom getting in my way. Oops. I don't know how to undo that. Further more, everything continued to repond in a highly confusing manner, until I suddenly lost my internet connection altogether. I can connect through aol, but it now seems that Microft Internet explorer has lost my settings, and I don't know how to put them back. In the corresponding box on the pc I'm using now, there's a message which says "Do NOT delete". Well, I didn't, but something evidently has. Could this be due to a virus of some kind? Loking again at Norton, I found the box was unchecked for msn messenger protection. Maybe something got in through the IM window? It was all up-to-date, anyway. julie Tag: 2 Hard Drives Tag: 43336

        • securing wireless usb devices I manage the computers for a small charter high school. We have a wireless network, and some of the usb adapters are being stolen. Any ideas on how to secure these devices? The only solution I have come up with so far is to take them all off the computers and make the kids check them out. The other thing they are doing is unplugging them from the computer, and since there are 6 usb ports on these computers, they are getting plugged back into the wrong port, and then they don't work. Are there any usb port covers available somewhere? thank you. Tag: 2 Hard Drives Tag: 43335

        • Certificate Services Correct me if I am wrong: I have created CA xyz. I have created web server certificate. Now, I need client machines to trust this CA, but I don't want to place private key CA on the client machine(because it could be stolen and somebody could impersonate me). From the mmc trusted root CA I exported xyz into xyz.cer file. Does xyz.cer contain public key? If not, how do I export public key? Thanks in advance Tag: 2 Hard Drives Tag: 43334
