I am giving my computer away and want to clean the hard
drive before I do. How do I permanently delete everything
on the hard drive?

You will need a third party program that can erase data to DOD -Department
of Defense Standards. There are freeware and trialware ones. I like East Tec
Eraser which can also scramble file names . --- Steve

Steven has this right. Some other programs along the
same lines you can find via Google.com searches:
(Info here from ZDNet)

Sure Delete is a freebie that removes all traces of
deleted files from your hard disk. You can even erase
entire subdirectory trees in a single operation.
(Free/Win95-98-NT)
Mutilate File Wiper completely destroys files by
overwriting them with ones, zeros, and random bit
patterns so they can never be recovered. You choose from
three different levels of file destruction.
(Shareware/Win95-98-NT)
NecroFile lets you permanently destroy individual files
or entire directories on command. It also clears your
hard drive of previously deleted information, leaving
more space for the programs and files you want.
(Shareware/Win95-98-NT)

I like Eraser v5.7. It's free, and once installed in Windows if you want you
can create a boot floppy that you can use to boot off of and completely
erase your drives. You can configure it to whatever erasure standard you
want, from simple overwrite to erase to DOD standards. Oh, and it's
freeware.

software.

I'd recommend googling for some 3rd party software to wipe the disk. You
should be able to find something cheap or free that claims to be DOD
compliant. Without using something like that, the new owner might be able
to read some of your confidential data even if you deleted it.

Looks like I forgot to sync my newsgroup app before responding. :-)
Never mind my post. The other posters seem to have covered it all better
than I could.

Your advice is ALWAYS welcome Drew. A little redundancy just affirms a
solution. --- Steve
