I have recently been told that Windows Me is not HIPAA
compliant, and that in order to have the security features
needed for HIPAA compliance within a medical office the OS
would have to be changed. Anyone know anything about this?

This is probably correct, but more info about your installation is needed.
It would be prudent, if economically feasible, to upgrade your machines to a
hardened operating system. If you are going to stick to Windows, yes I
think that you should go to Windows 2003 server/Windows XP Professional
Workstation; and be sure to have them properly configured.

HIPAA is very complex and certainly extends far beyond which OS you are
using. "I have recently been told ..." Get it in writing with
recommendations for remediation. This is not an area you can afford to
speculate on.
