Those of you being smart asses about this situation
because you don't have it and THINK you have the solution
are complete morons.

This worm infects through file sharing progams (kazaa,
etc). The victim does not have to open ANYTHING to start
it. It is NOT recognized by any of the "leading virus
software protection" therefore your Virus protection
program is obsolete in this matter (unless they come up
with a patch).

I receive nearly 200 of these infected e-mails per day. I
(as well as most computer users) am smart enough NOT to
open them. Since this happens, important e-mail does not
go through and I don't feel like scanning every single e-
mail that I KNOW IS INFECTED.

I have tried numerous applications that have been posted
on this newsgroup (which are greatly appreciated) but
each one has never detected a virus or worm running on my
computer.

IF ANYONE HAS A VALID ANSWER TO STOP THIS PLEASE POST IN
A HEADER TO HELP THOSE THAT ARE EXPERIENCING THIS.

SMART ASS COMMENTS ARE NOT WELCOME.

The emails continue because someone you know has your email address in
their address book and they have an infected computer. Or your email
address has been harvested from somewhere. Getting the non-stop bogus
emails doesn't mean you are infected. You won't be if you don't open
any of the attachments. The emails will slow down/stop when infected
computers are "disinfected". If your email has been harvested from
somewhere else, who knows how long it will be. I get the emails too, so
set up my email address so I can only access it via webmail (therefore
any emails I get stay on my ISP's server and my Norton anti-virus
doesn't have to work overtime quarantining dozens of emails everyday).
When the bogus email stuff stops, I'll reconfigure my email onto my
computer.

You're wrong.

Most decent Antivirus applications (and up to date)
intercept this virus when user accesses it.

Getting email, doesn't mean you're infected.

And yes user HAS to open email or execute a file
to get infected. On older systems with IE5 and less
and unpacthed ones, user can get infected just by reading
the html email message that this virus sends. If user
is using up to date IE/Outlook, they get infected only
by OPENING/RUNNING the attachment.

So again to anyone else listening, DON'T OPEN ANY attachments.

You can't stop email flow. It's just email and anyone can send it to you.

Your ISP can stop this virus/spam by providing spam detection for your
email.

You can stop it also, but only after the fact, by setting up
email filtering rules in whatever email client you're using.

Everyone's virus problem info.... by Eric

Eric

We have about 2000 mailboxes. We scan every mail at
firewall with F-Secure. Then our mailserver scans every
mail with Sophos, Norman and Sybari. Then we scan every
mail in workstations with McAfee. We also have strict
policy with attachments. We drop both way all *.exe,
*.com, *.scr, *.bat, *.pif, *.cmd ... about 30 different
attachment type.

We have no worms or virusis coming from mailserver to our
workstations. We did have Slammer in January, but that's
an other story.

Now we are afraid of getting worms from webmail. If the
webmail is SSL secured, then it's our McAfee in
workstations, that is the first to see the attachment un-
secured. We do have Trend in our proxyserver, but it can't
scan those crypted messages at all. We have of course
strict order not to use webmail, but we can't disable
those.

Hope this helps.

I'm not quite sure what it is you think's happening. On
the one hand you show some recognition that the virus is
manifested when you open the attachment, but then on the
other you are implying that the proliferation of emails
is the virus itself.

Now, it may be tempting to think that there is a certain
amount of self-satisfied smugness in the replies of some
contributers, but I have found the vast majority
knowledgable and genuinly interested in suggesting viable
defences.

Some of these may may retrospective (i.e. "in the future
don't bla bla"). I think that's fair enough. The message
with these trojans is that we basically have to grin and
bear it and eventually they'll die down.

But on a point of order, I found myself worrying that
you're going to dismiss me as a "smart assed moron" if I
have the temerity to discuss this with you. I think that
if you want help for free then a more amiable and less
angry approach might yield more fruitful results.

You are not the only victim of this.

Eric,

Yes, you can. Install a product like WebSense to work with your proxy server
to block access. Not cheap, but it works darn well..
