I have a simple question -- a change has recently been made in the way we
sign onto our PC, I assume from some Windows Update, and I cannot figure out
how to change back to the old procedure.

There are only two of us using this PC, and there is NO need to have to
click onto a user-specific icon to start up Windows XP and move onto tthe
desktop we share (i.e. no need to select a user to load personalized desktop
images -- we use the same desktop). I cannot figure out how to eliminate
this step, and allow our PC to move straight to the desktop without having us
to choose the only user we have identified. Can anyone give me step by step
instructions on how to eliminate this senseless step?

Something you installed needed .Net 1.1 (HP printer software or the
like). Go to Windows Update and take the Custom (not Express) scan for
updates and download/install the .Net 1.1 service packs and patches.
This will make your log in return to the way it used to be.

This did NOT work. I downloaded and installed the Net 1.1 update, and a
following security update to that download. But,. when I rebooted mt PC, the
same issue happened -- I was asked to unnecessarily click on my "user icon"
to load that users customized desktop.

Malke merely pointed out this was the likely cause of your having to choose
at logon now - as that update would have installed the .NET user and thus -
having more than one user - despite one not being shown to you as a valid
logon name - you have a Welcome screen logon now. Further solutions were
provided. You should not stop with one trial if you are given several to
test. =)

The solution you should try is likely listed here:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Autologon.htm

As stated previously.

As for it being "unnecessary" - it is not that it is unnecessary - it is
annoying to you. Even if you do not have the option to click on and fix it
with the web page solutions given twice in this thread - the logon function
is necessary in Windows XP and just happens automatically once you change it
to do so.. In many origanizations - this is not allowed; of course, this is
likely a home machine and you can weaken security as you see fit. =)
