Did you install 1) HP patches required before installing Service Pack 2
(SP2); 2) XP SP2? If not and you connected to the Internet without a
firewall in place you may already have malware.

Get the HP patches and SP2. Get the tools/updates you will need to do at
least a simple malware/virus scan of your computer (see link below):

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Take the computer off the Internet and any local area network.

When you are sure the computer is clean, apply the HP patches and then
install SP2. Make sure the SP2 firewall is on before connecting to the
Internet.

How can I successfully and safely remove this malware from a machine running
windows 2000 professional operating system without upgrading to xp and
protecting against future occurances of these programs.

Run various antispyware apps and see what you can find. Windows Defender,
AVG Antispyware, AdAware, Spybot, are all good.

Help with malware:
All MS-MVP Sites.
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm
http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.
