    - stolen operating system my laptop might have been stolen, or it is a practical joke. if i don't get it back in two days i would like to report to microsoft that the windows system was stolen in case somebody tries to go online. Does microsoft have a database of serial numbers of stolen software?     - Annoying expired credentials msg This message keeps popping up in Win 2000 system tray. Pops up several times per hour while telecommuting to my office. IT people at at a lost why this happens. Message is: "Expired Credentials-Windows needs your current credentials to insure network connectivity. Please lock this computer then unlock it using your most recent password or Smart Card..etc..etc The computer is on a Home network with 2 other computers. Also the computer connects to Fiberlink for telecommuting. Can't find a thing on Microsoft site that adresses this it simple terms. Thanks in advance for any help.     - ntldr missing when users reboot their 2K and XP systems Has anyone seen this? I just noticed it this morning. I'm up to 21 effected systems (that I know of). My solution was to create a Win 2K boot disk and manually copy over ntloader files. That fixed the problem...for now. XP was more difficult. Symantec and Anti Trojan programs found nothing.     - internet explorer problem I keep getting a Internet Explorer pop up window saying" Internet Explorer cannot open this Internet web page.     - MSFT folder I notice I am getting pop-ups now when I am on IE(5.5sp2) that I never received before. I did a right click and properties on one of them and noticed that it was located in a folder called "MSFT" in my Windows/Temp Internet Folder. I never had this "MSFT" folder before. When I look in it, I notice the images for the pop-ups I am receiving. I deleted the "MSFT" folder, but it keeps coming back. Does anyone know how I can get rid of this folder and the pop-ups?     - Virus on Windows ME Hi guys, Any help to get rid of the "actualice" virus on my Windows ME is appreciated. It slows down my computer, closes my IE as soon as it is open, and has disabled the save function on my computer (like I cannot save anything on floppy and CD) I installed the Norton AV 2004, but it would not open after installation. I had to restart the computer (with the NAV disc in the drive) to let Norton perform an emergency test and scan. Amazingly, the scan found no infected files. The only good it did was it turned all the desktop icons (which had looked blurred and incomplete) back to norma looking icons. And the computer was a little faster too. Any help?     - Scheduled Tasks Fail I have the start of a new Active Directory Domain with 2 servers only I created a simple batch file to write the current time to a file The task is scheduled to run on the base "Forest Server" every hou forever. This task works just fine.     - Something's removed my 'Security' tab! HELP I looked in my Internet Options the other day and noticed that I no longer have a 'Security' tab, which means that I don't have the option of, say, making my browser 'check before allowing cookies', or 'check before running scripts', etc Someone told me that a piece of Spyware may have disabled my access to my security settings. Is this possible? (I've since removed any potentially harmful stuff.) Is it something I could have done myself perhaps, not the spyware? I'm familiar with Explorer, and I've checked through Help (etc), and it isn't my imagination. The tab's gone. How do I enable the tab again - that's if it's still still there in the background somewhere? I have Windows ME, and whatever Explorer generally comes with that. (9?     - how to tell what popup/ad blockers are running I recently started having problems retrieving my Comcast mail (uses I.E. as its base program). When I asked Comcast what was going on, they said I must have a pop-up or ad blocker running. I haven't intentionally installed a blocker ... although my kids did have some extra toolbars (Yahoo, Google, AOL) that had pop-up blocker capability. I've removed the toolbars and have gone thru the internet options as best as I can ... but I still can't get the popups (which, in this case, I need) to work (Comcast uses pop-ups for several of the items on their main page). What else can I look at so that I can start accessing my Comcast mail again?? I have a workaround where I can login to AOL, go to comcast.net, sign-in and bring up my mail -- but I want to do this directly from Comcast/I.E Thanks in advance!     - Security on User objects in active directory Hi, I have an OU called X in this OU i created another OU (Y). This OU (Y) containts users accounts. I changed the security settings on these user accounts in the second OU (Y). The problem is that every hour the security of these user accounts in OU (Y) resets to something "basic" ! which p.e. doesn't even allow a user to change his password.     - people cant see my servers ip address well, this one seems to be a tough one to figure out. Its like I have a fire wall that Im not aware of. check this out. I can access the internet & use chat services & all that cool stuff. But if someone tries to send me files over the internet through like icq, they get an error msg saying session is blocked by a firewall. Also, If i host a server for a game or verbal internet chat service on my computer, I can access that server fine but when I give the ip address to those same people they cant access it at all, like it doesnt exist or something.     - File sharing between an AD Domain controller and a member server through a firewall Hi, I am configuring an access-list for traffic from a dmz server to an internal server. The dmz server is a 2003 domain member server. The internal server is a 2003 AD controller and file server. The plan is to allow file access from the dmz server to the internal server. Eventually, the dmz server will be a front-end to the internal server from the Internet through SSH or Terminal Server sessions. So far I opened the following ports to the internal server (from the dmz) on the firewall: TCP domain UDP domain tcp 88 udp 88 tcp 135 udp 389 tcp 389 tcp 445 udp netbios-ns udp netbios-dgm tcp netbios-ssn I am able to perform nslookup from the dmz server using the internal server for DNS and NAT seems to work fine. But when I try to map a drive from the dmz server to a share on the internal server I get: "The drive could not be mapped because no network was found". Am I missing something? Thanks for your help.     - How Do I Prevent Unauthorized Access To My System? While going on line a few nights ago our msn messenger icon in the lower right hand corner had indicated that we already signed into msn messenger on another computer. When seeing this message I knew that someone had gained access to our system through msn messenger. In haste I took the msn messenger programme and deleted it from my system but I don't know if this action prevented any further access to our system. In addition to this incident we also been having proplems with other online programs including outlook express, Kazaa download site, windows media player(when on line). In the majorty of cases these applications will close down for no reason and the only thing that I can figure out is that who ever has gained access to our system is still in opur system and is screwing around.     - Virus attacks Hi. I have a strange problem... I'm trying to install a fresh copy of Win XP. Right after I instal it, I'm trying to connect to the internet to download the security updates get rid of all this holes that the viruses us.     - Problems disabling ports 135 and 1025. Hello I have a Windows Server 2003 Web Edition box I'm trying to get ready to put on the net and I can't get I've read all sorts of procedures to disable ports 135 and 1025, and none of them have worked. I would settle even to change them to listen on localhost instead of all IPs at this point. DTC is disabled, NetBIOS is disabled, Task Scheduler is disabled, I've changed a bunch of registry keys and everything save deleting rpcrt4.dll but it doesn't close the thing. Port 1025 is owned by lsass.exe and 135 by svchost.exe, which doesn't help very much. rpcdump.exe says 1025 is "ncacn_ip_tcp", an "IPSEC policy agent endpoint", but disabling IPSEC Services doesn't close it either. Everything seems to depend on the RPC service, so maybe port 135 is an unwinnable battle for a usable IIS server. Is there a way to tell either or both of these services to listen on localhost, or a specific IP? Slapping a firewall on it isn't a desirable hack/kludge/"solution" Thanks for any advice.     - Network Security. Hi all. We currently have a scenario where all our users connect to a main terminal server, and from here they can terminal serve to various other machines on the network. What we would like to be able to do is limit where the users can get access to. You can't easily do this without a very detailed Group Policy or a proxy
server or filtering firewall of some sort. And because the former could
very likely be evaded, the latter is probably your only option. See MS ISA
server, or any other Windows-aware proxy/firewall solution.
