OWA server's digital certificate expired.
Besides the yellow icon that indicates it is expired, does the text is sent
unencrypted by any chance ? I don't think it is unencrypted, but a co-worker
claims that's what happens with expired certificates...

That is very easy to test. Send an encrypted e-mail anywhere, save the
received mail to .eml and open with notepad.

If the SSL server certificate has expired you will get a warning and a
yellow icon.
The session will still be encrypted.

However, it is recommended that you renew the server certificate.
