Define "intrusion detection" please?

Intrusion detection is traditionally defined as either network (NIDS) or
host-based (HIDS). NIDS analyses network traffic and alerts on suspicious
acivities. Vista doesn't have NIDS but you can run NIDS on Windows. Snort
(www.snort.org) is free and runs on Windows.

HIDS analyses files and system calls for suspicious activities. Windows
Defender has features of HIDS.
