Following instructions from Microsoft I downloaded and
installed the KB824146 Security Update (Blaster patch) on
my new computer. I checked in the Add or Remove Programs
folder and noted that Windows XP Hotfix - KB824146 was
listed as an installed program.

Then I went to WindowsUpdate website, had my computer
scanned and downloaded all 13 required Critical Updates.

When I checked the Add or Remove Programs folder I noted
the 13 new Windows XP Hotfixes, but that Windows XP
Hotfix - KB824146 was no longer listed as an installed
program.

Why is that? Is there a more recent update which I must
have downloaded and which replaced KB824146 so that it's
no longer in my system? Or should I reinstall KB824146?

Twice I tried talking to someone on the Microsoft 1-800-
PCSAFETY number, but they could not help!

Someone advised me that I should have disabled my Norton
Antivirus software when I downloaded the Windows Critical
Updates, but I cannot get anyone at Microsoft to confirm
or deny that. Can anyone help?

Go to the www.windowsupdate.com site and check for any patches
required. If it says you are up to date, then that is that.

If the patch you have installed individually (eg 824146) is later related as
part of a cumulative patch, then the original stand-alone install will
disappear from add/remove programs. That is standard procedure.
