doing anything. Hello. I have a PIV 2.7G IBM clone with
256M Ram and a large HD.

My question is Windows XP home edition is constantly
reading and writing and am curious if this is normal?
What is it doing? Maybe they should program it to do
something useful for the end-user like keep itself tuned
up, defragged and delete temp files. Previous versions of
Windows didn't need to do this and yes, we should know
what it is doing. We did pay quite a bit of money not
just for XP and the hardware, but also all the wasted time
we spent cleaning up issues because Microsoft rushed his
not ready for prime time products to the marketplace and
let the end users iron out the bugs and worse yet security
issues. Thanks!

Happen to have Office XP installed? How about an enabled Osa.exe or Fast
find in Word? Mdm.exe?

Installing support for fast searching
If you didn't install fast searching support when you installed Microsoft
Office XP or your Office application on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or Windows
98, from the Windows Control Panel, reinstall Office using Add/Remove
Programs, and, in Office setup, do the following:

Choose Add or Remove Features and click Next.
Click the expand indicator next to Office Tools.
Click the icon next to Support for fast searching, and then choose Run from
My Computer.
Note After support for fast searching is installed, fast searching is
enabled by default.

You'll need to look for the links as they relate to XP if you see that you
have any of those items listed in XP's equivalent of Msconfig. I run W98se
and have Office XP Word2002, Outlook 2002, etc. and those items I've
mentioned were a resource glomming, disk writing nuisance.

I never installed Office XP, but I have Office 2000 and
all of the critical updates installed. I remember fast
find creating an issue on a Win98Se system loaded from an
office 2000 install at the office, it was removed from the
start menu and issue resolved. I know the solution is not
tthat easy. I thank you for your vast knowledge base on
these subjects. I do remember a sa.exe and i could never
get rid of it until I uninstalled Norton products. Isn't
sa.exe a byproduct from Norton system works? Mdm.exe may
be intalled. Thanks so much I'll check those out and get
back to you.

Cheers,

Tony

Hi Tony -

That's Osa.exe Tony. If you have Office 2000.
OFF2000: What Is the OSA9.exe File and What Does It Do?

Not related to the hard drive working all of the time but a nuisance
nonetheless.
(Mdm.exe)

Sa.exe is something altogether different. Amongst many others, it can be:

If that which I've offered doesn't help you to resolve your problem, you
might try a newsgroup that is devoted to WinXP.
