I read on microsoft.com/technet about (critical
update) "Buffer Overrun in JPEG Processing (GDI+) Could
Allow Code Execution (833987)" and (important
update) "Vulnerability in WordPerfect Converter Could
Allow Code Execution (884933)".

If I visit Microsoft Office Downloads Home Page
(http://office.microsoft.com/en-
us/officeupdate/default.aspx) and also
www.windowsupdate.com, will these two sites tell me if I
need to install these two updates?

I have Windows 2000 (not XP) but I do have Office XP. Why
won't office.microsoft.com (updates) or windowsupdate.com
tell me? Do I have to read down the list of affected
software and update manually.

So confused,
Jimmy

Seriously? If that is the case, Microsoft SUCKS! Why am I
doing the "scanning" for them? Why can't THEY do it???

This is confusing! I read down the list of Affected
Software and it's like links to EACH thing, like SEPARATE
undates.

WTF!?!??!?!?!

That's right. That's what it says.

The automatic scanning is for the OS and IE. I don't think it scans
applications on a machine. If it did people would be screeming accusations
that MS was spying on their machines.

When it comes to Office, I usually wait for the full Service Pack to come
out that already contains all the patches instead of playing the "Chase the
Patch" game. Generally patches for Office don't represent as severe a
problem as patches to the OS and IE represent, so I don't get as worried
about them.

They are separate updates. You update those which meet your needs,
and don't need the others. Not all software or all patches are able
to use Windows Updates to install, some of these predate WU. It's
getting better, but if you truly believe Microsoft sucks, you may wish
to investigate alternatives.
