There are dozens of pages that describe using
netstat to look at ip tables. And many authors
suggest closing unneeded ports.

But I have not yet come across a sigle document that
tells me the commands to control closing a port in
windows if it exists.

And don't suggest buying more utilities. That is the
biggest scam.

If is a partial listing of what I am getting. Yes it is
kazaa, but is there some way to control it's access by
port???

you can only 'close' ports two ways
1. stop the application or service that has it open
2. install a firewall

installing a firewall doesn't really 'close' the port, but it does prevent
access to it from outside your computer.

so either turn off kazaa or turn on the windows firewall if you have 2000 or
xp, or download zonealarm or another free firewall, or buy a software
firewall, or buy a hardware firewall.

Actually, you can physically open and close ports but it's
not recommended - it's extremely difficult to know which
ports are going to be used by your applications. The
other post is correct - you need to let the firewall do
the work - and I highly recommend a hardware firewall over
a software based one. Having said this, the Norton
firewall software is actually very effective when used
with Lavasofts AdAware 6.0. Also, if you dig around the
Internet you can find a modified version of Kazaa that has
the spy ware removed.

Agreed, but Windows 2000 doesn't have a software firewall. It does have
ICS, which provides the benefits of NAT protection to the clients behind it,
but there's no protection for the ICS machine itself. XP adds a firewall
blocking inbound traffic. The XP firewall doesn't block outbound traffic,
but can log it optionally.
