Helllo, I have a small netowrk (10 server, & 60 desktops) that I want
to block IM completely thoughout the network.

What is the easist, least expensive way to block IM that is centralized
(not needing to install something on each PC.

I have turned off the specific IM ports, so I am assuming IM is using
port 80 for access inside my network. I cannot turn off port 80.

Thanks for any help
Gerald

IM == instant messangers ? If true, then you have a big problem.

There're a lot of instant messangers that support different configurations
(port, server, protocol, etc), so just making a "rule" on a router and
filtering traffic might not solve your problem. Most likely, you would not
find the solution how to block all IM, but blocking ICQ will be rather a
simple problem -> on a proxy you should block login.icq.com:5190. (But this
would not save you if user uses webicq, or switches to another messanger
:) ).

So my advise, - locate what IM are widely used in your network, determine
their ports, servers and then try to block it on a proxy.

(I hope your users that're using IM will forgive me)

The easiest way is to remove ALL IM applications on all computers and create
your employees limited user accounts so they will not be able to install new
software.
Make sure all admin accounts + the hidden one in Safe Mode are password
protected.

www.imlogic.com <-- one app in specific that's been rated highly in industry
magazines as of late.

I don't know if the free version applies to businesses so:
