Hello All,
I have come to know that people talking to you on MSN Messenger can find
out your IP address using netstat or a packet sniffing software. How can I
block people from doing that ?
My network setup is such that I have a router that is connected to a gateway
and all our network clients are connected to the gateway. Although due to
using NAT , individual users IP address is not exposed , but people can find
out the router IP address and then do a whois to track the rest of the
details. How can I block people from finding out our network IP Address ?
Any help will be great in this respect, thanks a lot in advance.
Imran.

If you establish direct IP connection, you can masquerade your IP address if
you're using a NAT firewall on a separate computer. However, it creates
difficulties with some protocols, including some of those in MSN messenger
and NetMeeting.

Also, I see no reason trying to obscure your IP address if you're honest
Internet user. If intrusion from the Net is a concern, use firewall.

thank you very much for your response. We are already using SBS Firewall, so
the IP address of the user behind the firewall should not be exposed , the
question is if someone tries to find his IP address using MSN will he be
sent the router IP address or not ?
As I was able to locate this users IP address since I was on the same side
of the firewall. But will some one be able to find the router IP address by
doing a query from outside the firewall using MSN?

The router IP address is exposed in every packet that goes out.

In terms of it being easy to find, it is in the headers of smtp/pop3 email
messages, for example.

If you are hoping to keep this a secret, I think you will have great
difficulty.

Don't connect to the Internet? You *could* use a third-party proxy, on some
other computer. If you trust *them*...

Dishonest may be too strong a word--misguided, maybe.

I'm guessing he's afraid of some form of attack brought on by some form of
behavior on the part of a user behind the firewall--or maybe just because of
some political type issue--the kind of organization involved, for example.

Whatever the reasoning, trying to hide your IP isn't going to work--you need
to deal directly with whatever threat arises.

:) well guys I am the network administrator so I have to provide services to
the users behind the firewall, this particular user left a company recently
and joined this company and does not want his old colleagues to know that he
has joined this new company , so that is the whole story why I want to
protect his IP address being tracked by his old mates when he talks to them.
Thanks a lot for your comments, and yes you are right it is virtually
impossible to protect a routers IP address, so all that I have done now is
setup the firewalls and told the user not to use file transfers with the old
colleagues :)
thanks again for all your comments :-)

There've been numerous instances in the US where such circumstances have
lead to lawsuits between the companies involved in relation to perceived
theft of trade secrets.

There may be more at risk than just the individual employee's privacy.
