Hello! I have WIndows XP/home on my PC and I update my
Norton anti-virus software weekly. I've run a scan on my
computer and am not infected with the Blaster worm. Do I
still need to install the Microsoft patch if I continue
to update my anti-virus software regularly? I'm reluctant
to do so if I don't have to, since I'm afraid the patch
will interfere with other programs on my system. And if I
still do need to install the patch, can you tell me which
one it is? There are quite a few that the Microsoft site
lists for me, and I can't tell which one is for Blaster.
Thanks. MG

Yes , the AV software won't prevent infection from this worm.
You should also enable the built in firewall in XP

http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/8/b/98bcfad8-afbc-458f-aaee-b7a52a983f01/WindowsXP-KB823980-x86-ENU.exe

Yes, you need the patch and you need it fast. Once you get
the worm, it will shut you down, BEFORE you can download
the patch.
Once that happens, you need to find a machine running on
windows 98 or some such. then you have to download teh
patch to a floppy, transfer it to your other machine and
load it.
However, you will still be screwed, because the patch
prevents the worm, but you will need to download a
cleaner, from SYMANTEC, to get rid of the what already
exists on your machine.

I did it the other way round, got the worm cleaned out and
got reinfected in the few minutes I was trying to download
the patch.

on the one machine i have had to clean so far it was easy to go to the task
manager, stop the msblast.exe process and then do the clean and patch
process. this seemed much easier than many of the other things i have seen.
