Hi,

I de-installed my Norton 2003 and installed Avast 4 Home instead, however,
it messed up my settings for emails and internet. I could no longer get my
messages and when I was trying to open Internet explorer, I was getting that
page where it says that the page is missing.

I received the keys from Avast and have 60 days to register Avast. My
question is if I register it and get updates, is it going to mess up my
emails and internet settings? I had to call my ISP to help me in solving the
problem and spent over 45 minutes. So I don't feel like going through this
again. Let me know your comments.

I have the following software installed:
Windows 98
Outlook Express
Internet Explorer
Avast 4
Zone Alarm
Ad-aware
Spybot- Search & Destroy

Thanks,
Christie

Hi Christie,

I understand you are concerning about if Avast will change your IE settings
to access the website. However, Avast is developed and maintained by the
third-party manufacturer so that Avast will have more accurate information
on their product. I suggest you contact Avast to get more information. For
your convenience, I have listed Avast support below:

Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find

I would like to provide some suggestions on the OS side. According to my
experience, it is possible that Avast will change some settings. You may
consider backup the system before you take any action. You can restore the
system once there is any problem. You can install Backup utility from
Add/Remove Programs->Windows Setup tab->System Tools to choose Backup,
after installing Backup, please invoke it from
Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Backup

For more information how to backup and restore Win98 system, please refer
to the following article:

Any questions, let us get in touch!

avast home does not mess up anything... it is a program that is written
correctly,
NOT like problematic (trash) programs like norton....

Possibly what happened was Norton didn't remove something, and it conflicted
with Avast. While I've never used Avast, I do know that Norton has issues.
When you uninstall it, you have to go to Symantec's site, and download a
'tool'. Otherwise, it doesn't completely remove itself from the system
registry and other places. That can cause problems with your new AV
program.

The 'good news' is, updating Avast shouldn't affect anything now.. I say
this, with the assumption that everything's working correctly now. Also, if
it does affect anything, then you can always contact Avast's customer
support. Since you have a valid license. Off hand, do you remember what
all you had to do to get everything running? The reason I ask is, if you
do, you probably won't have to call anyone, and you probably won't have as
much of a problem fixing it, if this does happen again.
