    - XP Constantly works in the background even when I am not doing anything. Hello. I have a PIV 2.7G IBM clone with 256M Ram and a large HD. My question is Windows XP home edition is constantly reading and writing and am curious if this is normal? What is it doing? Maybe they should program it to do something useful for the end-user like keep itself tuned up, defragged and delete temp files. Previous versions of Windows didn't need to do this and yes, we should know what it is doing. We did pay quite a bit of money not just for XP and the hardware, but also all the wasted time we spent cleaning up issues because Microsoft rushed his not ready for prime time products to the marketplace and let the end users iron out the bugs and worse yet security issues.     - My W2K-SP4 PC is running very slow.... Hello all I have the latest MS security patches installed and scanned all drives for viruses and nothing is found. My PC is doul boot (with ME), when I boot up with ME everything is normal.(so it is not my DSL connection).     - Adware/ Spyware Hello all! I have a question, and I'm sure you all have heard this over and over again. I have been beating my head in, trying to get the Adware/ Spyware off of my computer. It has my computer hostage! I have installed Spybot (Search and Destroy), and Adware, both which have detected certain items and quarantined. The problem is: I still have the same problems (Slow start-up booting, home page changes, search functions and all others associated with spyware.) Does any one have any idea if there is any other alternatives to rid my computer of this junk? I have been told by some of my IT people at work to wipe my hard disc clean and re-install everything again (of course, after saving everything on a disc.) During attempted restart and set- up, I get message on Black screen, "Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2." Then below that on same screen it says, "Windows could not upgrade 1 or more syst. files b4 starting- windows may not start or run properly. If windows fails to start, run set-up again".     - Multiple user identities, XP and resident spyware checkers I have just set up several user identities on my machine (Windows XP Home) and I notice that when I change users, AVG antivirus and Zone Alarm automatically appear in the system tray, but Spybot resident and Spyware Guard do not. Does this mean that they are not active when a different user is logged on, or are they still active in the background but not visible? How do I set it up so that these spyware resident programs are automatically active for all users? I'm sorry if this is a totally elementary question, but I cannot afford to have these programs not active when my children are using the computer logged on under their own seperate user identities. I have UnxUtils, but there are two problems: (1) DOS batch files calling the UnxUtils' .exe's require a screwy syntax that isn't documented, requiring a trial-and-error approach, and (2) I cannot figure out how to write a zsh shell script and make it execute in XP.     - Service failed to start Hi, For 3 days now, when I restart my servers, all the services running with a domain account fail to start. The error msg is "... logon failure". When I re-enter the password in the ad-hoc field and press OK, the system says that the service has just been granted the logon localy permission, but the service will not start anymore.     - Latest Patch Problem? Not sure if this is the right forum but I think I have a new behavior since applying the latest security patch to my XP PRO dell machine. My I.E. browser Version: 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633 thinks it's offline when it isn't. I will browse to a URL and I get the dialog box that says do I want to connect or stay offline.     - Windows Critical Update Notification Glitch Hi group, Wucrtupd.exe runs and I get the indicated updates (Win98 upgrade from WFW3.11). The dialog indicates updates were successfully installed and the log also indicates the same.
