I keep hearing on the radio and other places that without
anti-virus software (PC-cillin, Norton, or some other)
a PC computer connected to the internet will get a virus
within a couple minutes.

I've been using the internet for several years now with no
virus protection and haven't detected any viruses on my Windows
95 system.

Is it possible the new viruses today will not run on an
old Win 95 setup and I don't have to worry about it, or
should I install a firewall and anti-virus software for
added protection.

How would I know if a virus is on my system? Everything
seems to work ok.

Of course you haven't detected any viruses, you're not running antivirus.

There are a whole lot of viruses that still run on Windows 9x. Most viruses
try not to do anything that would alert you to their presence, because then
you would remove the virus.

Use anti-virus. http://housecall.antivirus.com will do a one-time virus
check without installing anything [but also without offering you any
protection]. www.grisoft.com is free antivirus. www.kerio.com,
www.zonealarm.com and www.sygate.com are free firewalls, you should have one
as well.

It is certainly possible you don't have a virus.

Bill;
"...and haven't detected any viruses..."
How would you without AV installed?

You may be less susceptible, but you are far from immune.
With the wide variety of solutions and some free, there is no reason not to
be protected.
Unprotected computers are not only a menace to themselves, but other
computers since an infected computer is often the source viruses, worms, and
other malware are spread.

Quite possibly. The same *could* be said about a firewall.
Of course, it's a roll of the dice.

Okay - analyzing what you said:
"...with no virus protection..."
"...haven't detected any viruses..."

How could you detect the viruses you might have without AntiVirus software.
Not all viruses are out to destroy your computer - many want to use it as a
jump-point. Others want to collect information on you and send it back to
someone. All kinds of neat varieties out there.

Generally speaking - you are probably safe. It's like running Windows 3.11
for Networks right now - almost. hah Personally, I have no idea how you can
stand it - the computer has to be fairly old - likely generally slow. But
that is neither here nor there. If I were you, I would take one of two
roads..

1) Download and install some freeware AV - if you can find one that works
with Windows 95. Here's a list to get you started.

avast! (Free and up)

AVG Anti-Virus System (Free and up)

AntiVir (Free and up)

RAV AntiVirus Online Virus Scan (Free!)

Symantec (Norton) AntiVirus (~$11 and up)

Kaspersky Anti-Virus (~$49.95 and up)

Panda Antivirus Titanium (~$39.95 and up)

(Free Online Scanner: http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/)

McAfee VirusScan (~$11 and up)

Trend Micro (~$49.95 and up)

(Free Online Scanner:

2) Purchase a new system and catch up with the rest of us. *grin* Here's a
list to get you started with that too:

Well, as I pointed out earlier - you may not - unless you SCAN for it using
an antivirus application. Problem is, if you are running Windows 95 - I
cannot guarantee any of the newer (even online versions) of the AV software
packages will function.

While all are possible, it would be pretty rare that you would get a virus
with the computer just having it connected to the Internet. Most of the
time, it needs to surf the Internet for awhile before you are infected. On
the other hand, you could be hacked instead.

However I personally believe that you can't be hacked within a couple
minutes. I believe that most (if not all) magazines classify the port
scanning as a hack which is not truth. Hacking needs to identify the
computer and the OS, find the holes and perform the attack. Being a
Certified Ethical Hacker and a Certified Information System Security
Professional myself, I reckon that it is pretty rare that a hacker could do
all in such a short time.
