My husband and I have WinXP/IE6/AOL9/NAV on one laptop and
Win98/IE5.5sp2/AOL6/Nav on another. Someone told us to
install Ad-Ware and/or SpyBot on both of our computers. We
are senior citizens and a bit hesitant because we are
afraid something might happen to our computers and IE.
#1- Will both of these programs install on both of our
computers?
#2- Someone said they will disable NAV. Is that correct?
#3- Is it very hard (difficult) to install Ad-Ware and/or
SpyBot and execute it (use it)?
#4- Could it harm WinXP, IE (6 or 5.5) or AOL (6 or 9)?
Please try to help. Thank you.

Always good to be cautious. ;-)

Yes.

No

Installing is simple. I personally prefer the AdAware interface, and Spybot
tends to detect things as "problems" that may not be (although using it to
remove said items rarely causes trouble in my experience). For both, make
sure you update their reference files before running a scan so they have all
the latest information.

> #4- Could it harm WinXP, IE (6 or 5.5) or AOL (6 or 9)?

Highly doubtful. But you do back up your data regularly anyway, I trust?
Burn a CD, get an external hard drive to back up your data files, etc... you
should do this on a regular basis to protect your data from *whatever*
happens to your computer.

Hope this helps.

You're lucky to have a friend giving you good advice. Both of them are great programs and SHOULD be on ANY persons computer ever accessing the Internet. Neither one of them will hurt your comps, on the contrary.
1. Both of them will work on both computers. They are both FREE to use
2. First time I've heard that that these programs would disable or be in conflict with ANY program, except the programs the are supposed to keep out. That is the nasty programs. So would really surprise me if NAV would have problems. And IF a conflict should arise they are easily removed/unistalled
3. I like "Spybot Search & Destroy" better. It has more functionality. I've used both. But for ease of use I'd go with "Ad-aware". They both do the main task equally good
4. As I said. 99% sure they won't harm ANY normal programs

So download one of them two and they I REALLY recommend downloading and installing Spywareblaster too. Spywareblaster will see to it that the nasty applications don't get a chance to be installed on your computers. Spybot and Ad-aware are applications that remove the nasty applications if they have somehow got installed on your computers (which you sometimes won't notice)

You can download my recomendations here

Ad-aware = http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=50
or go here first http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download

Spywareblaster = http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.htm
half way down the page

Remember to always keep them updated. Check once a week. Or they will be useless.

My hubby and I are also Sr. Citizens--I successfully
installed Ad-Aware on the advise of our son, who is a
computer security person. To date, after just a couple of
months, this program has removed upward of 500 undesirable
entries into our computer.

We did download the AdWare and downloaded the update (to
our WinXP/IE6/AOL9). We did a scan (we didn't know which
scan to use - do you know best setting?) and it found 4
cookies which we deleted. It also found 1 Registry Key (I
believe Alexa), but we didn't delete that one. I remember
reading somewhere that IE or one of the programs loads
Alexa when it is installed. Would you know anything about
this?
Thanks again.

No, Alexa is not part of any OS. Alexa is spyware.

WARNING!

Don't listen to Paul Adare. What I guess is that he works for the spyware company. If he don't then she shouldn't say things that he don't know about
Simple for you all. Just search for it on the Internet or on Microsoft site.
Plain and simple, SPYWARE!

The only thing MS ever had called Alexa was an EXTRA downloadable plugin (web accessory) for the ooooold IE5, and only IE5. Long time ago. It NEVER came with the OS or the Internet Explorer. You had to download it yourself and install it.

Don't listen to this one either Alice. Paul told you the truth. In =
fact Alice I was very surprised when you told us what AdAware found on =
your machine. You have been very good. You really had nothing on your =
machine and you and your husband should be very proud of yourselves. =
You have been doing well on the Internet.

Let me qualify my earlier comment on Alexa. It is part of all versions =
of Microsoft Internet Explorer since 5.0. It is not spyware in the =
strict definition. It is a helper application of sorts that Microsoft =
thought at one time would be a customer friendly appplication. Over the =
years it has been blown out of proportion and AdAware really should not =
be catching this. But I guess the public sentiment is too strong to =
remove it from the things AdAware catches. But you can in AdAware. =
Just tell the application you want to remove that object from being =
considered a pest. It is in the configuration or you can choose that =
when Alex is first found.

Ask though if their are any other pests it finds before overiding in =
this manner. Most of what AdAware finds should be removed but not =
Alexa. Leave it alone.=20

You can remove Alexa if you don't care about the "what's related" links - it
won't hurt anything.

Well, obviously I AM more of a genius than you, ingnorant little one, since I DON'T get any Alexa at fresh install. Still simple to prove. Give me an article at Microsoft site telling backing up your statement. My backup is that it's not there, and that I've tested fresh install + KNOWLEDGE. Btw, I don't need to brag about titles as you do with your nic. Kinda rediculous. A title is often a sign of lack of knowledge and a way of trying to prove to others you know more than you really do.

Alexa is indeed there by default. Play nicely with the other kids or don't
play at all.

Hate to burst your bubble "Danger", but your comment is a bit like comparing
an old Pinto to a Corvette Z06.
Paul Adare is a expert at what he does and has years of good experience and
in looking at your grammar I would say he has been doing this long before
you were born. And your extra postings using the CDO interface (nice way to
try and hide) do nothing to reinforce your knowledge, only the lack of it.

Here is a site that discusses Alexa and what it does. Use your own judgment with regard to what to do
