Hi, I have cleaned up an infected PC using NAV2005, Ad-Aware SE, Spybot1.4,
all run in safe mode. Except for one problem. When I reconnect to the
internet a yellow triangle with an exclamation point inside starts blinking
in the system tray. Within a minute or so a pop-up comes out of it with the
message:
~ SYSTEM ALERT: Popups
~ Your computer is infected with spyware
~ managing pop-up advertisements (OHPE ver
~ 4.12_23)
~ Click the icon to learn more on what you can do
~ about pop-up windows and other unwanted
~ software.
When I disable my internet connection it almost immediately stops blinking
and popping up, and vice-versa when I enable the connection. I included the
complete verbiage in case someone recognizes it.
I am running XPpro/SP2, all critical Microsoft updates are applied, IE
pop-up blocker is on, Noton SystemWorks2005 is running with default settings.
Thank you for your help in advance,
Alan

Though I don't think this is the immediate problem make sure that a firewall
is also protecting the computer and network. You also want to double check
your security zone and privacy settings for Internet Explorer for the user.
The internet zone should be set at medium or higher and for privacy you also
want medium or higher. While in privacy make sure that pop up blocker is
enabled, than there are no unwanted sites are listed in settings, and that
the pop blocker level is at least medium and you may want to try high. Also
check that there are no unwanted sites in the trusted web content zone. Go
into Control Panel/add and remove programs to make sure no unwanted programs
are shown there as spyware will sometimes be listed though AdAware SE, etc
usually remove them and of course make sure that you are using the latest
definition files for any program you scan with. If you still need more help
below is a Google search of OHPE Ver 4.12_23 that you can use to see how
others are dealing with that spyware problem. --- Steve

I got hit with Spyaxe and its Trojan cohort 2 days ago.I tried manual and
other removals to no avail. Finally tried this:
http://www.infopackets.com/channels/en/windows/nicks_computer_security/2005/20051220_remove_spyaxe_removal_instructions.htm

It involved a few Demo downloads of Spyware and Malware scanning programs
but it cured my PC with WinXP running.Follow the directions closely.
Been running smoothely and all the System32 registeries are clean now of
Spyaxe foolishness. All needs links to demo programs are included also on
that site.

Hope this helps
WKR
