We have Win2K & NT pc's with IE6 (not sp1). Which patch
should be run??? Micosoft has posted 2 (ie6 & ie6sp1). The
one for IE6 only lists WinXP clients.

Hi

Try to install the non SP1 version and see if it will let you, see the Note
part below for more on this issue (but I recommend that you upgrade to IE SP1).

From the Prerequisites part of
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822925

"To install the Internet Explorer 6 version of this update, you must be running
Internet Explorer 6 (version 6.00.2600.0000) on Windows XP."

But under the "Note:" section for the Prerequisites part:

"Note Versions of Windows and versions of Internet Explorer that are not listed
in this article are either in the extended phase of the product life cycle or
are no longer supported. Although you can install some of the update packages
that are described in this article on these versions of Windows and of Internet
Explorer, Microsoft has not tested these versions to assess whether they are
affected by these vulnerabilities or to confirm that the update that is
described in this article addresses these vulnerabilities. Microsoft recommends
that you upgrade to a supported version of Windows and of Internet Explorer and
then apply the appropriate update."

My understanding is you will need to install IE SP1 first. For example, IE
5.5 is still supported by Microsoft, but only for Windows ME, so new patches
for IE 5.5. will only be written and tested for Windows ME.

Yes, that is correct. I just tried to install q822925.exe for IE6 Gold (SP0) on
a VMware Win2k computer with IE6 Gold, and got this message:

"This update requires Windows XP"
