Today while on the aol and even while using my ACT e mail
I keep getting interrupted by these pop up dialogue boxes.

Should a pop up box appear on your screen with the=20
words "Messenger Service" in the title bar such as the=20
one below, chances are that you have Windows Messenger=20
Services enabled.=20

Windows XP Professional
1. Click Start =BB Settings =BB Control Panel=20
2. Click Administrative Tools=20
3. Double click Services=20
4. Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"=20
5. Right click the highlighted line and choose=20
Properties=20
6. Click the STOP button=20
7. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll=20
bar=20
8. Click OK

I hope this helps! Please let me know if it does.

Are these pop ups the windows messenger type of pop up.
i.e juanita is looking for love or
Adverts to stop pop ups
or some other type of advert like that.
If so follow this
run services.msc
then right click on messenger and click on stop
then double click on messenger and change start up type
to disabled
click on apply
exit
This will not make any difference to "windows messenger"
but will shut down microsoft messenger.

Not sure if this sounds too simple or not, but if you do
not yet have one, your bestr bet is to install a
firewall. It should cut out unwanted pop-ups. You may
be able to download a free firewall from
www.symantec.com, otherwise I suggest you purchase an
internet security package such as 'Norton Internet
Security'. I have it. It was easy to install, and has
worked wonders on cutting out unwanted pop-ups.

good luck.

That's just a bandaid on a subdural hematoma, in my view. The real
underlying problem is that the ports are exposed to the Internet in the
first place.
My boilerplate reply:

You need a firewall. 'Messenger spam', is not in itself harmful,
but is symptomatic of a larger problem - your computer has ports open from
the Internet.

You can disable the Messenger service, but that is unwise as a solution as
you'll still have the underlying problem that caused you to get the messages
in the first place - consider the messages a useful warning that you have no
protection from the Internet. You need a firewall. 'Messenger spam', is not
in itself harmful, but is symptomatic of a larger problem - your computer
has ports open from the Internet.

For a standalone machine, see www.sygate.com for a free personal firewall,
or if running Windows XP, you can enable the built-in firewall.

See http://securityadmin.info/faq.htm for more info.
