I like AdShield from www.adshield.org. The default settings work very
well to block scripted popups and if you want to take the time to
right-click web page ads or download someone's block list, you can block
a lot of the more popular ad sites as well. IE just redoes the page
without the ad or the ad frame shows a blank.
AdShield is a browser helper object and doesn't appear in add/remove
programs or in Downloaded Program Files (activex controls). Use a BHO
browser utility to remove it. Being a BHO means AdShield is efficient
and well integrated into IE. You have to enable third-party browser
extensions in Internet Options (on by default) to allow BHOs to be
installed.
All but two of the AdShield options affect only listed pages. But the
other two, "Block scripted popups" and "Block delayed popups" affect
every web site and can cause trouble. Block delayed popups disables
Windows Update, so put WU in the exclusion list if you use that feature.
